The University of Aberdeen has made a pivotal announcement regarding the future of its city center facilities. Marischal College East, a prominent building within the university’s portfolio, is set to close within the next 18 months. This decision is part of a broader initiative aimed at reimagining the university’s campuses to better serve students, staff, and the community.

Relocation of university collections

As part of the transition, the university’s collections currently housed in Marischal College East will be relocated to the King’s College Campus. This move is designed to ensure that the university’s historical collections are more accessible for teaching, research, and public engagement.

A spokesperson for the University of Aberdeen emphasized the importance of providing a suitable environment for these collections, which play a vital role in the institution’s educational mission.

Future strategy and campus development

The closure of Marischal College East aligns with the university’s long-term strategy, known as the Aberdeen 2040 strategy. This initiative focuses on creating more inviting spaces for students and staff, developing laboratories that align with research priorities, and establishing a hub to strengthen connections with industry. The university is also exploring the possibility of consolidating its Business School onto a single site, enhancing the overall educational experience.

Impact on current occupants

Current occupants of Marischal College East, including All In Ideas and Citymoves Dance Agency, have been informed of the impending closure. All In Ideas has confirmed that they will continue to operate from the building until their lease expires in late September 2025. Meanwhile, Citymoves will maintain its operations at the Anatomy Rooms until March 2026. The university is in communication with Aberdeen City Council and other stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition and to address any concerns related to the closure.

Long-term vision for Marischal East

In addition to relocating collections, the university is actively seeking a long-term occupier for Marischal East to secure its viability within the city. The aim is to find an appropriate tenant who can contribute to the building’s future role in the community. The university’s commitment to enhancing its campuses reflects a broader trend in higher education, where institutions are increasingly focused on creating environments that foster collaboration, innovation, and community engagement.

As the University of Aberdeen embarks on this transformative journey, it aims to not only modernize its facilities but also to ensure that its historical assets are preserved and utilized effectively. The next 12 to 18 months will be crucial as the university implements these changes, ultimately striving to create a more dynamic and accessible educational environment for all.
