Retirement plans lead to farm sale

Derek and Linda Barrack, a couple with deep roots in farming, have decided to sell their beloved partnership farm, Mill of Kingoodie, located in Whiterashes, Aberdeenshire. The property, which has been in the Barrack family since 1958, is now on the market for offers exceeding £1.15 million.

This decision comes as the couple prepares to transition into a new home nearby, allowing them to enjoy retirement while remaining close to their agricultural legacy.

A rich history in farming

Derek, now 69, recalls his early days on the farm, having been just three years old when his parents, John and Dorothy, took over the property.

His passion for farming was evident from a young age, as he eagerly assisted his family during weekends. After leaving school at 15, Derek pursued a trade, working as a blacksmith before spending 30 years in the agricultural machinery sector with George Sellar & Son. However, his true calling was always farming, which he returned to in 2004, alongside Linda, who has been his partner in both life and business.

Features of Mill of Kingoodie

Mill of Kingoodie is described by Aberdeen & Northern Estates (ANE) as a “well-equipped farm” situated in a productive agricultural area. The property boasts an impressive four-bedroom farmhouse, constructed from stone and slate, which has been meticulously maintained. The sale includes all carpets, curtains, blinds, light fittings, and bathroom fixtures, making it a turnkey opportunity for potential buyers.

In addition to the farmhouse, the property features a versatile two-storey building. The ground floor offers a separate storage area, a large double garage, and an adjoining shower room. The first floor is designed for relaxation and entertainment, featuring an open-plan area complete with a kitchenette, breakfast bar, snooker table, and log burner—ideal for hosting gatherings.

Extensive agricultural facilities

The farm’s agricultural facilities are equally impressive, with buildings that provide extensive accommodation for livestock, grain, and general storage. Previously, the farm operated a 90-100 calving cow herd system, which has now transitioned to accommodate over 250 store cattle and a fattening system. The outbuildings offer up to 37,566 square feet of covered storage, making it a valuable asset for any agricultural endeavor.

The land spans approximately 113 acres, divided into 13 field parcels, currently utilized for grassland, hay, and silage production. This prime agricultural land, combined with the quality of the buildings, presents a rare opportunity for buyers looking to invest in one of Aberdeenshire’s most productive farming regions.

Encouragement for prospective buyers

James Presly, a director at ANE, emphasized the unique opportunity this farm presents, noting the interest it has garnered both locally and nationally since its listing. He encourages potential buyers to reach out for viewings, highlighting the farm’s quality and the lifestyle it offers. As Derek and Linda prepare for their next chapter, they hope to pass on their legacy to new owners who will appreciate the hard work and dedication that has gone into Mill of Kingoodie over the decades.
