In a remarkable display of cultural appreciation, American YouTuber Xiaomanyc, known simply as Xiaoma, has captivated the residents of Aberdeenshire with his impressive command of the Doric dialect. His recent journey through the picturesque towns of Aberdeen, Gardenstown, Fraserburgh, and Peterhead has not only showcased his linguistic talents but also highlighted the rich cultural tapestry of Scotland.

Exploring the Doric dialect

Xiaoma’s YouTube channel, which boasts over 6 million subscribers and 1.5 billion views, features videos where he learns and converses in local dialects and languages around the globe. His latest adventure in Scotland was organized by Grampian Escapes, with tour guide Jamie Robertson providing an immersive crash course in Doric.

Starting in Aberdeen, Xiaoma met with local speakers who explained the rarity of the dialect in the city, setting the stage for his linguistic journey.

A cultural immersion in Aberdeenshire

During his travels, Xiaoma visited the Globe Inn, where he was humorously assured that the haddock was “aye peckin.” His exploration continued in Gardenstown, a charming fishing village where he learned about the local way of life from 75-year-old fisherman John. Xiaoma expressed his admiration for Gardenstown, stating, “I loved Gardenstown. I think it’s probably one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited.” His encounters with Highland Coos added to the charm of his experience.

Challenges and connections in Fraserburgh

In Fraserburgh, Xiaoma ventured into the Balaclava Bar, where he faced the challenge of understanding the Doric spoken by the locals. “It was definitely tough understanding the older guys in the Balaclava Bar,” he remarked, humorously attributing some of the difficulty to the whisky. Despite the challenges, he formed connections with the regulars, showcasing the warmth and camaraderie of the local community.

Reflections on linguistic diversity

Xiaoma’s journey culminated in a visit to Jamie’s grandfather’s home in Peterhead, where he picked up some traditional sweets for his children. Throughout his travels, he noted the similarities between Doric and other languages, particularly its Germanic sounds. “The who, what, when, why words were a highlight,” he shared, drawing parallels with Frisian, a language he encountered in the Netherlands. His experiences underscore the importance of preserving regional dialects in an increasingly homogenized world.

A love for Scotland and its dialects

Having visited Scotland multiple times, Xiaoma expressed his growing affection for the country and its diverse linguistic heritage. “Every time I visit, I seem to have more and more fun,” he said, reflecting on his previous adventures, including speaking Gaelic on the Isle of Uist. His commitment to promoting linguistic diversity resonates in an era dominated by English, emphasizing the significance of regional dialects and their role in cultural identity.
