Miriam Gardiner's unwavering faith and dedication to her family and community shine through her legacy.

Remembering a selfless community pillar: The life of Miriam Gardiner
Miriam Gardiner, a beloved figure in Aberdeen, has left an indelible mark on her family and community. Born on March 5, 1961, in Coleraine, Northern Ireland, she moved to Aberdeen at the age of seven.
Growing up in a family deeply involved with the Salvation Army, Miriam developed a strong Christian faith that guided her throughout her life.
A life dedicated to service
From an early age, Miriam was immersed in community service. Her parents, Walton and Elizabeth Platt, were active members of the Salvation Army, and their influence shaped her values.
Miriam played the cornet in the church’s brass band, showcasing her love for music and her commitment to her faith. After completing her education at Hanover Street Primary School and Linksfield Academy, she pursued a career in nursing, reflecting her caring nature.
However, the loss of her mother in 1980 profoundly affected her, leading her to shift her focus to psychiatric nursing. This career change allowed her to continue helping others while navigating her own grief. In 1989, she married Simon Gardiner, and together they welcomed two children, Daniel and Bethany. Despite the challenges of her marriage, Miriam remained a devoted mother, striving to create a loving and supportive environment for her children.
A legacy of love and resilience
Miriam’s life was characterized by her selflessness and unwavering faith. Known as a “woman of peace,” she dedicated herself to her family and community. As her children grew, she began volunteering as a finance administrator at The Junction Church, eventually making it her full-time job. Her commitment to service continued even after her cancer diagnosis in 2021, as she volunteered with various organizations, including the Flourish Project and the Bethany Christian Trust.
Despite facing health challenges, Miriam’s spirit remained unbroken. After a brief period of being cancer-free, she was devastated to learn that her illness had returned. Her children, Daniel and Bethany, recall her strength and grace during this difficult time. “She never complained and just pushed through,” Daniel shared. Her focus on others, even in her final days, exemplified her selfless nature.
Remembering Miriam’s impact
Miriam Gardiner passed away on January 2, 2024, just two weeks after her cancer diagnosis. Her family and friends have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support, with many sharing how she impacted their lives. “One word keeps standing out: ‘selfless.’ She always put others first,” Bethany reflected. Miriam’s legacy lives on through her children, grandchildren, and the countless lives she touched.
A celebration of her life took place on January 17, where family and friends gathered to honor her memory. Daniel and Bethany cherish the moments spent with their mother, particularly the laughter and love that filled their home. As they navigate their grief, they find comfort in the faith she instilled in them and the memories they created together.
