The community comes together to remember the Aberdeen schoolgirl on this poignant anniversary.

On the solemn anniversary of her passing, the community of Aberdeen came together to remember Jessica Rennie, a vibrant 10-year-old who tragically lost her life a year ago at Northfield Pool. Jessica, a pupil at Kittybrewster Primary, is fondly remembered by her family and friends, who have worked tirelessly to create a memorial that reflects her spirit and love for life.

A heartfelt memorial in the community garden

In a touching tribute, Jessica’s mother, Kelly Beattie, and stepfather, Kevin Beattie, collaborated with local staff and volunteers from Fersands and Fountain Community Projects to establish a serene memorial space in the Off the Rails Community Garden.

This tranquil area, located beside the Woodside Fountain Centre on Marquis Road, serves as a place for reflection and remembrance, allowing community members to honor Jessica’s memory in a peaceful setting.

The memorial features a variety of personal touches, including a Harry Potter-themed artwork that celebrates Jessica’s love for the beloved series. The artwork prominently displays Jessica’s name, her birth date, and the date of her passing, accompanied by an inspiring message: “The wand chooses the wizard. Always follow your dreams. Love mum, stepdad, and brother Kevin.” This heartfelt sentiment is further enriched by the inclusion of the Slytherin house logo, symbolizing Jessica’s connection to the magical world she cherished.

Messages of love and remembrance

To commemorate the first anniversary of Jessica’s untimely death, family and friends gathered to pay their respects. Balloons adorned with touching messages were released into the sky, while floral tributes were laid at the memorial site. A centerpiece tree, adorned with a heart-shaped message, reads: “Sister. The memories we’ve shared only make me miss you more.” This poignant reminder of Jessica’s impact on those around her highlights the deep love and connection her family continues to feel.

Kelly Beattie expressed her ongoing connection to Jessica, sharing, “When I feel like giving up, Jessica shows me little signs to keep going.” These signs, whether a song on the radio or a white feather falling nearby, serve as reminders of Jessica’s enduring presence in her family’s lives. The family has also created a storage unit filled with keepsakes and memories, ensuring that Jessica remains a cherished part of their lives.

The community’s support and ongoing investigation

Kevin Beattie reflected on the family’s profound loss, stating, “We would give anything to have Jessica at home with us. She is missed every single minute of every day.” He described Jessica as a determined and spirited girl who always knew what she wanted, and her family supported her in every endeavor. The community has rallied around the Beattie family, providing unwavering support as they navigate their grief.

As the investigation led by Aberdeen City Council into the circumstances surrounding Jessica’s death continues, the community remains united in their remembrance of a young girl who touched the lives of many. Jessica’s legacy lives on through the love of her family and the support of her community, ensuring that she will never be forgotten.
