Remembering Ian Latimer

The Highland community is in mourning following the passing of Ian Latimer, a former chief constable of the Northern Constabulary, who died at the age of 68. Latimer, who served in this capacity for a decade, was known for his unwavering dedication to public service and his profound impact on the community he served.

A life dedicated to service

Latimer’s career in law enforcement began long before his tenure in the Highlands. He joined the Northern Constabulary in 2001 after serving with both Devon and Cornwall Constabulary and Merseyside Police. His leadership qualities quickly became apparent, earning him the respect of his peers and the community alike.

In recognition of his exemplary service, he was awarded the Queen’s Police Medal in June 2006, a testament to his commitment and effectiveness as a leader.

Tributes from colleagues and friends

Following the news of his passing, tributes have poured in from former colleagues and friends. Julia Hodson, a former colleague from Merseyside Police, described Latimer as a “great leader” and a “decent, loyal, kind and generous man.” She fondly recalled their time working together, emphasizing his ability to bring joy and laughter to those around him. Lisa Lugton echoed these sentiments, calling him a “brilliant man” and a great chief constable.

Impact on the community

Latimer’s influence extended beyond the police force; he was a strong supporter of community events, including the Highland Cross, a 50-mile duathlon that traverses the Scottish Highlands. Organizers of the event expressed their condolences, highlighting Latimer’s role in fostering cooperation between the police and the community. His legacy will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of those he touched throughout his career.

Final farewell

Ian Latimer is survived by his wife, Margaret, and their children, Matthew, Niamh, Jonathan, and Daniel. His funeral service is scheduled for 2 PM on February 28 at the funeral home of William T Fraser and Son in Inverness. For those unable to attend, the service will be live-streamed, allowing friends and family to pay their respects from afar. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Highland Hospice will be accepted in his name, honoring his commitment to the community he served so faithfully.
