The long-awaited transformation of Harlaw Academy’s sports pavilion is finally underway, as Aberdeen City Council has approved plans for a new facility worth £2.69 million. The existing pavilion, which has been closed for over a decade, has fallen into disrepair, becoming a target for vandalism and anti-social behavior.

Local officials have described the current structure as ‘ruinous,’ emphasizing the urgent need for a modern replacement that meets the community’s needs.

Addressing community needs

Local Councillor Martin Greig has been vocal about the necessity of this project, stating that the youth in the area have been deprived of proper sports facilities for far too long.

He noted that students from nearby Ashley Road School often lack basic amenities such as changing rooms and toilets when they visit the field. This new pavilion is expected to provide essential facilities, including changing rooms, toilets, and learning spaces for both schools and community groups.

A positive step forward for local sports

Community members have expressed their support for the project, viewing it as a significant opportunity to revitalize an area that has suffered from neglect. Sandy Stephen, chairman of Queens Cross and Harlaw Community Council, remarked that the new pavilion would serve as a much-needed hub for outdoor sports and fitness activities. He emphasized the importance of creating a space where individuals of all ages can come together to engage in physical activities and build social connections.

Demolition and future plans

The demolition of the existing pavilion is expected to commence this year, with design works for the new facility still in progress. Aberdeen City Council has conducted a thorough review of the current building’s condition and determined that a complete rebuild is the most viable option. The new pavilion is anticipated to be completed by the 2026/27 financial year, marking a significant milestone for the local community.

As the project moves forward, residents are hopeful that the new sports pavilion will not only enhance the local landscape but also foster a sense of community and promote active lifestyles among residents. The initiative reflects a broader commitment to improving public amenities and ensuring that local needs are met.
