A disqualified driver faces severe penalties following a police chase in Peterhead.

In a recent incident that has drawn attention to road safety and law enforcement, Edvin Korzov, a 47-year-old man from Peterhead, has been handed multiple penalties after attempting to evade police. The event unfolded near the Harbour Lights bar in January of the previous year, when officers approached Korzov’s vehicle, a black Vauxhall Mokka, prompting him to accelerate away in a bid to escape.

Details of the incident

According to fiscal depute Stephanie Cardo, Korzov’s actions were immediate and reckless. As soon as the police identified themselves, he “started the engine and accelerated away,” ignoring their requests to stop. This behavior not only endangered his life but also posed a significant risk to other road users.

It was revealed that Korzov was not the registered keeper of the vehicle at the time of the incident, raising further questions about his responsibility and decision-making.

Previous offenses and driving history

Korzov’s driving record is far from clean.

In 2022, he was previously banned from driving for over a year due to serious vehicle safety issues, including faulty brakes and worn-out tires. Despite these warnings, he was caught driving at an alarming speed of 104 mph on the A90 near Foveran. His history of reckless driving raises concerns about his disregard for road safety and the law.

Legal proceedings and penalties

During the court proceedings at Peterhead Sheriff Court, Korzov initially denied responsibility for the vehicle but later submitted a guilty plea as the case progressed. His defense solicitor, Marianne Milligan, stated that he had attempted to shift blame onto a friend who he claimed was in charge of the car. However, Sheriff Annella Cowan was not lenient in her judgment. She emphasized that Korzov would not receive any leniency for his late admission of guilt, resulting in a £400 fine for failing to comply with police instructions and an additional £500 fine for driving with a disqualified license. Furthermore, he has been handed a new driving ban of 15 months.

Implications for road safety

This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of adhering to driving regulations and the consequences of reckless behavior on the roads. The sheriff’s firm stance on the penalties reflects a commitment to ensuring that individuals who disregard the law face appropriate repercussions. As Korzov was warned, he must refrain from driving a motor vehicle under any circumstances, highlighting the ongoing efforts to enhance road safety and reduce incidents of dangerous driving.
