The Craft Bar in Pitmedden earns national recognition seven years after revival.

Local pub celebrating national award for community efforts
A local pub celebrates its national award, showcasing community spirit and revival efforts.

The Craft Bar in Pitmedden has recently been awarded the prestigious title of Pub of the Year for Aberdeen, Grampian, and Northern Isles, a remarkable achievement that highlights the pub’s transformation and its role as a community hub. This recognition comes seven years after local councillor Paul Johnston took the initiative to save the village’s only pub from closure.

A community effort to save a local treasure

When Paul Johnston assumed ownership of The Craft Bar, it was in dire straits. The pub had shut its doors, leaving the community without a gathering place. Drawing inspiration from a friend’s successful pub venture in Shropshire, Paul decided to take action.

“When we took over, the pub was in a very poor state and had severe problems,” he recalls. Despite the challenges, he felt a strong sense of responsibility to revive the establishment for the benefit of the community.

Expanding drink options and fostering community

Under Paul’s stewardship, The Craft Bar has flourished, boasting an impressive selection of over 300 wines, 80 gins, and a variety of craft beers. This diverse offering has attracted both locals and visitors, turning the pub into a vibrant hotspot. Paul emphasizes the importance of quality in their drink selection, stating, “One of the big assets of the north east is how good our brewing and drinks industry is.” The pub proudly features local brews from Fierce in Dyce, Six Degrees North in Stonehaven, and various selections from Speyside.

Building community connections through hospitality

Paul and his wife Roseanne have created a welcoming atmosphere that encourages patrons to explore new flavors and enjoy each other’s company. “I believe that well-run pubs have a great effect on the community,” Paul explains. The Craft Bar has become a place where people gather, share stories, and forge connections over a pint of beer. The pub’s success is not just measured by its award but by its impact on the community, fostering a sense of belonging and camaraderie.

As The Craft Bar continues to thrive, it stands as a testament to the power of community spirit and the importance of local establishments in bringing people together. With its recent accolade, the pub not only celebrates its achievements but also looks forward to many more years of serving the Pitmedden community.
