The Scarlets have secured a significant signing with All Blacks backrower Cullen Grace joining from the Canterbury Crusaders, strengthening their pack ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The Scarlets have made a substantial addition to their squad with the signing of All Blacks backrower Cullen Grace from the Canterbury Crusaders. This move underscores the Scarlets’ commitment to bolstering their forward pack, a key area of focus for the team.
Grace, a versatile player capable of excelling across the back row and at lock, brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the Scarlets. At 26, he is entering the prime of his career, having already made a significant impact at both the provincial and international levels.
Grace’s Impressive Rugby Career
Grace’s rugby journey began in New Zealand, where he progressed through the Crusaders Academy before making an immediate impact at the Super Rugby level. His standout performances earned him international recognition, including his debut for the All Blacks against Australia in 2026.
He has also represented the Māori All Blacks on three occasions, showcasing his talent and adaptability.
Known for his physicality, athleticism, and rugby intelligence Grace has established himself as a key figure for both the Crusaders and Canterbury. His leadership qualities are evident, having captained one of New Zealand rugby’s most successful provincial teams. This experience aligns perfectly with the Scarlets’ vision of building a competitive and cohesive team.
Why Grace Chose the Scarlets
The Scarlets’ interim director of rugby, Nigel Davies expressed enthusiasm about Grace’s signing. “When we looked at the profile of player we wanted to bring into the club, Cullen stood out immediately,” Davies said. “He is a proven performer, but what really impressed us was the person behind the player.”
Davies highlighted Grace’s professionalism, competitiveness, leadership, and genuine desire to improve every day as qualities that are crucial for the Scarlets’ ongoing development. “He comes from a culture where winning, accountability, and continuous improvement are simply expected. That experience is incredibly valuable and something that will benefit not only our team on the field but also the players around him,” Davies added.
Grace’s Excitement for New Challenge
Grace himself expressed his excitement about joining the Scarlets. “Scarlets is a very proud rugby club with a great history and tradition, and that was something that really appealed to me,” he said. “I am looking forward to coming over, learning, growing my game, and doing everything I can to contribute to the club, its rugby group, the supporters, and its legacy.”
Grace also mentioned the appeal of the United Rugby Championship (URC) and European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR) competitions. “The style of rugby played in the URC and EPCR competitions and the quality of the competition was another big attraction for me. It is a challenge I am really looking forward to,” he stated.
The Scarlets’ Strengthening Squad
Grace is the seventh signing the Scarlets have made ahead of the 2026/27 season. Other notable additions include second-rows Harvey Cuckson and Alex Groves hookers George Roberts and John McKee Wales prop Corey Domachowski and Welsh-qualified Kiwi back-three player Isaac Murray-Macgregor.
Grace will join the Scarlets following the completion of Canterbury’s National Provincial Championship campaign later this year. His arrival is expected to significantly enhance the team’s capabilities and contribute to their success in the upcoming seasons.
