He was born in Surrey in 1961 and was a record producer and a music video director. He started making music in 1975 and became known as the frontman of Cardiacs, a band created by himself alongside his brother Jim Smith, Michael Pugh and Peter Tagg. The sad news of his death left his fans shocked.

Tim had left his band in 2008 after a heart attack had left him with hypoxic brain damage. His brain suffered a lack of oxygen that caused a big, unreversible trauma. The frontman had developed rare neurological disorder dystonia which left his dexterity impaired and so his ability to speak. He had no other choice: he had to leave his rock band. He actually made so much effort in his recovery process that he was able to oversee the completion of a second Sea Nymphs album in 2016.

Many fans and other musicians are paying tribute to Smith on Twitter and on other platforms. One wrote: “Incredibly sad to hear about the passing of Cardiacs’ Tim Smith. A unique musical mind, a wonderful man. What a s**t day. But he’ll always be the dazzling light at the centre of a huge musical family.”
