MTV EMA 2020: BTS as protagonists of the night
The MTV EMA 2020 were held on Sunday 8 November. Many guests attended the musical event performing remotely to comply with the rules established to prevent contagion from Covid-19. The music channel created a virtual stadium full of waving and cheering fans for the event, with the broadcast of pre-recorded performances from wherever the artists were located. Moreover, the winners accepted the awards to camera.
The protagonists of the night were undoubtedly the K-pop stars BTS. They picked up 4 prizes out of 5 nominations, including best song for “Dynamite” and best group.
The group’s first English song, Dynamite, was a great success for the band. It logged 34 million streams only in the USA and 300,000 sales in its first week, allowing BTS to conquer the first place in the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.
The other two categories in which they triumphed were the best virtual live act and the biggest fans. However, the seven-member band was unable to mark their achievement, as there was no ceremony and no audience, due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Among the other artists who participated in the musical event, the British band Little Mix hosted the show. They performed “Sweet melody” without the member Jesy Nelson who, through a statement, made it known that she had health problems that did not allow her to be present. The group still took home the award in the Best pop act of 2020.
After winning the Sanremo 2020 Festival, Diodato is also successful at the MTV Europe Music Awards. The singer was the winner of the Best italian act category. The nominated together with him were the Italian artists Elettra Lamborghini, Irama, Levante and Random, but he managed to prevail.
Lady Gaga was the Best artist, while French DJ and producer David Guetta won the award for Best electronic act. He performed “Let’s Love” with British singer Raye in the Hungarian capital Budapest, accompanied by a laser show.
Among the performers was also Alicia Keys who sang “Love Looks Better” and Sam Smith, who performed “Diamonds” on the stage of an empty theatre.
