November 5 is a sacred date for the UK. Guy Fawkes Night has always been about celebrating the spirit of the protests against Government corruption, wearing those Guy Fawkes masks that have become a symbol of the anti-establishment. This time, people did not wear any face coverings and marched against covid measures.
The ‘Million Mask March’, the anti-establishment annual event taking place in Trafalgar Square, took another turn yesterday when protesters were not wearing any face covering to march against covid restrictions.
The march started at the Strand in the afternoon and people were chanting ‘freedom’ and ‘no more lockdown’, although authorities were urging them to go home.
Officers arrested 104 protesters under the new covid regulations. Protesters were chanting and some carried signs reading ‘No more lockdown, no more cover-ups, no more masks, no more lies’. Police officers warned protesters they were ‘putting others at risk’ and they were breaking the law.
Commander Jane Connors led the operation and declared: “We are eight months into this national pandemic and frankly, there can be no excuse for people to dangerously breach regulations which are there to prevent further spread of coronavirus.. Tonight, a crowd of people chose to ignore the new regulations, to behave irresponsibly and meet in a dangerous manner… More than 100 of these people have now been arrested and will have to face the consequences of their actions.” She concluded: “I would continue to urge people across the city to keep yourselves safe and stick to the regulations.”
A similar anti-lockdown protest took place in Liverpool same time yesterday, where 13 people were given fixed penalty notices and 3 were arrested.
