Prince Harry pays tribute to brave young award winners

Prince Harry shines a light on the extraordinary courage of seriously ill children at the WellChild awards, urging them to keep fighting and smiling.

UPDATE: Duke of Sussex Highlights Resilience at WellChild Awards

In a heartfelt tribute, Prince Harry acknowledged the resilience of seriously ill children at the WellChild awards ceremony in London. The event, celebrating its 20th anniversary, featured inspiring stories of young individuals facing life-threatening conditions.

Prince Harry described these young award winners as a “beacon of hope and inspiration” for many.

Celebration of Courage

During the ceremony, Prince Harry urged the winners to “keep fighting. Keep smiling,” emphasizing the importance of their spirit in overcoming challenges.

He declared, “this is your moment,” underscoring the significance of their achievements. As WellChild’s patron, he met with the recipients prior to the ceremony, engaging in discussions about personal stories and the complex dynamics between siblings in difficult situations.

Harry’s visit to the UK included a poignant moment of remembrance for his late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.

He laid flowers at her resting place in St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, marking the third anniversary of her death. Meanwhile, his brother, the Prince of Wales, honored their grandmother at a nearby Women’s Institute gathering.

Memorable Moments with Young Award Winners

As the evening progressed, Prince Harry warmly interacted with the young recipients. He shared light-hearted moments with Declan Bitmead, a 17-year-old who won the inspirational young person award for ages 15-18. Declan, who has faced severe health challenges, joked with Harry about siblings, highlighting the camaraderie among the award winners.

In a playful exchange, Harry participated in a balloon sword fight with Gwen Foster, a nine-year-old born with spina bifida and hydrocephalus. Gwen presented the duke with tiny football shirts for his children, showcasing the personal connections fostered during the event.

Reflections on Resilience

Throughout the evening, Harry reflected on his experiences with the children. He stated, “I have always said for many years that I still have a child inside of me,” recognizing the youthful spirit these children evoke in him. He praised their resilience, asserting, “out of all of the qualities that these kids have, without question, their resilience – top still.”

The WellChild awards serve as a vital platform for celebrating the bravery of young individuals facing extraordinary circumstances. As the evening concluded, the duke left a lasting message of hope, urging the winners to continue inspiring others with their remarkable stories.
