Sir Keir Starmer Advises Andy Burnham to Focus on Manchester Mayoral By-Election

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has advised Andy Burnham to prioritize the upcoming Manchester mayoral election over any potential leadership challenge.

Sir Keir Starmer Advises Andy Burnham to Focus on Manchester Mayoral By-Election

The political landscape in Greater Manchester is heating up as Prime Minister Sir Keir starmer has urged Andy Burnham to focus on the upcoming mayoral by-election rather than launching an immediate challenge to his leadership. With the Makerfield by-election set for Thursday, the stakes are high for both the Labour Party and the region.

If Burnham secures victory in Makerfield, he would need to resign as Manchester mayor, triggering a by-election for his replacement expected by 6 August. This scenario has sparked speculation about Burnham’s potential leadership challenge, a move that Starmer has cautioned against.

Starmer’s Appeal for Unity and Focus

Speaking from the G7 summit, Starmer emphasized that a leadership contest would be detrimental to the country. He reiterated his intention to fight any challenge, stressing the importance of unity within the party.

“A leadership contest would be a bad thing for the country,” Starmer stated, urging Burnham and the party to concentrate on the mayoral election.

The prime minister highlighted the significance of the mayoral by-election, describing it as “very important” and calling on the party to “pull our sleeves up to make sure that there is another Labour victory.” Starmer also indicated his willingness to offer Burnham a cabinet position, stating, “I hope he wins the by-election and he’ll play a big part in the Labour government.”

Streeting’s Preparedness to Trigger a Leadership Contest

Amidst these developments, Labour MP Wes Streeting has expressed his readiness to trigger a leadership contest following Thursday’s by-election. Streeting, who resigned as health secretary last month, has delayed his challenge to give Burnham the opportunity to participate. Speaking to BBC’s Newsnight, Streeting said he would “prefer the PM to take a decision on his own terms rather than leave it for me or Andy or anyone else to trigger a contest.”

“If not, we can’t carry on with this uncertainty and paralysis, and there will need to be a contest, and I would be prepared to do that,” Streeting added. In response, Starmer acknowledged the speculation but redirected focus to the mayoral by-election, stating, “We then tip straight into the Manchester mayoralty by-election… so we’re all going to have to focus on that.”

Concerns and Reflections on Leadership

Some Labour MPs are concerned that Reform UK could capitalize on the mayoral by-election, despite Burnham’s substantial victory margin in 2026. Burnham’s supporters argue that the importance of the mayoralty strengthens his case for becoming prime minister sooner rather than later.

Reflecting on his leadership, Starmer described being prime minister as “the privilege of my life.” He emphasized his commitment to service, stating, “Not a day goes by where I don’t remind myself it’s a privilege.” When asked about the potential resignation of ministers backing a rival, Starmer declined to engage in hypotheticals, focusing instead on the immediate tasks at hand.

The prime minister’s leadership has faced further challenges with the recent resignations of John Healey and Al Carns from their defence roles due to funding disputes. The chief of the defence staff has warned that the UK’s armed forces may need to “dial back” training and operations without increased funding. Starmer noted that the new Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis is reviewing priorities and capabilities, with ongoing discussions on the matter.
