Multiple Attacks in Edinburgh Leave Five Injured, One Arrested

Edinburgh was rocked by a series of violent incidents on Friday night, leaving five men injured and sparking a major police investigation. The Counter Terrorism Policing is assisting Police Scotland in their inquiries, which have led to the arrest of a 36-year-old white Scottish man.

Authorities have assured the public that there is no further threat.

The evening’s disturbances began around 8:50 pm in the Sighthill area, where two men were reportedly injured. The Scottish Association of Mosques (SAM) identified the victims as worshippers who had just left the Broomhouse Mosque.

The two men were taken to the hospital for treatment.

The Spread of Violence Across Edinburgh

As the night progressed, police received reports of additional incidents in various locations across the west and north of the city. Three more men were allegedly attacked in the areas surrounding Telford Road and Leith Walk.

Officers responded to calls at the Origanio pizzeria on Leith Walk and a Shell garage on Telford Road, where a taxi had its windows smashed.

The victims, aged 22, 24, 27, and 39, sustained a range of injuries. Three of the men required hospital treatment, but none of their injuries are considered life-threatening. The Muslim Engagement and Development (Mend) organization reported that several of the injured individuals are Muslim.

Community Reaction and Police Response

Assistant Chief Constable Catriona Paton described the incidents as “shocking” and expressed her support for the affected communities. “There is no place for racism or faith-based hate in a Scotland which is at its best when we stand together,” she stated. Police Scotland emphasized their commitment to protecting the public and ensuring the safety of all communities.

In response to the incidents, Police Scotland closed off Leith Walk on Friday evening. Social media posts appeared to show a man with a knife on the street, and another video depicted a topless man on the ground shouting that he was “protecting the country” as he was held by an officer.

A Major Incident Public Portal (MIPP) has been established to encourage members of the public to submit any information they may have to the authorities. This portal aims to facilitate a comprehensive investigation into the events of Friday night.

Muslim Leaders Express Concern

Muslim leaders in Scotland have expressed a “profound sense of shock” following the incidents. Omar AfzalDirector of Public Affairs for the Scottish Association of Mosquesstated, “These latest attacks are deeply disturbing. However, they do not exist in a vacuum.” He highlighted the normalization of anti-Muslim hatred in public discourse and its potential consequences.

Afzal emphasized the importance of challenging prejudice to prevent such incidents. “What we are witnessing is targeted hatred spilling over into criminal violence at a time when anti-migrant and anti-Muslim mobilization is being openly promoted online,” he said.

The investigation into the incidents is ongoing, with extensive work being conducted to establish all the circumstances. The collaboration between Police Scotland and Counter Terrorism Policing underscores the seriousness of the situation. The public is urged to come forward with any information that may aid the investigation.
