Edinburgh Attacks: Five Injured in Apparent Anti-Muslim Violence

The tranquil streets of Edinburgh were shattered on Friday, 19 June, 2026, as a series of violent incidents unfolded, leaving five men injured and a community in fear. The attacks, which appeared to target Muslims, sparked widespread condemnation and a swift response from authorities.

As the city grapples with the aftermath, the nation stands united against the hatred that fueled these appalling acts.

The violence began in the Sighthill area of Edinburgh around 8.50pm, with reports of two men being injured. The situation escalated rapidly, with incidents spreading across the west and north of the city.

Police were called to multiple locations, including Leith Walk and Telford Road, where three other men were allegedly attacked. The victims, aged 22, 24, 27, and 39, sustained a range of injuries, with three requiring hospital treatment. None of the injuries are considered life-threatening.

The Suspect and the Motive

A 36-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incidents. Police Scotland confirmed that a report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal, and the individual will appear in court in due course. The suspect, described as a white Scottish man, was detained at around 9.30pm on Friday. Footage circulating online appears to show a bare-chested man carrying a large weapon and battering the door of a pizzeria. Another clip seems to capture the same man on the ground, shouting that he is ‘protecting the country’ as he is held by an officer.

Sir Keir Starmer, the UK’s Prime Minister, condemned the violence in a post on X, stating, ‘Absolutely appalling. No one should face violence on our streets. The suspect appears to be motivated by anti-Muslim hatred. I will not tolerate this – he will face the full force of the law.’ Scottish First Minister John Swinney echoed these sentiments, saying, ‘I am deeply concerned by these incidents. There is no place for violence, racism, or intolerance in our country.’

The Community Responds

The Muslim community in Edinburgh and beyond has expressed shock and concern over the attacks. The Muslim Engagement and Development (Mend) organisation confirmed that several of the victims are Muslim. The Scottish Association of Mosques reported that two of the injured men were attacked after attending prayers at their local mosque. The Muslim Council of Britain issued a statement saying, ‘The Muslim community is rightly nervous and worried. This violence is a direct consequence of political rhetoric that demonizes entire communities.’

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood expressed her horror at the events, stating, ‘I am horrified by the violence, which appeared to be motivated by anti-Muslim hatred. There is no place for hatred and violence against Muslims. I know it is not who we are as a country.’ Chris Murray, the Labour MP for Edinburgh East and Musselburgh, posted on X, ‘Everyone in Edinburgh stands with the Muslim community today.’

The Investigation Continues

Police Scotland, in collaboration with Counter Terrorism Policing and under the direction of the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, is actively investigating the incidents. Assistant Chief Constable Catriona Paton emphasized the support available to all communities, stating, ‘There is no place for racism or faith-based hate in a Scotland which is at its best when we stand together.’

A Major Incident Public Portal (MIPP) has been set up to encourage members of the public to submit information directly to officers. Police are appealing to anyone with information that could assist with inquiries to upload it using an online form. Scottish Government’s Justice Secretary Neil Gray commended the emergency services for their bravery and skill in bringing the incident under control, adding, ‘This was clearly a very serious incident, and my thanks go to the emergency services for their bravery and skill in bringing the incident under control.’

As Edinburgh and the wider nation come to terms with these shocking events, the focus remains on supporting the victims and standing united against hatred and violence. The investigation continues, with authorities determined to bring those responsible to justice and ensure the safety of all communities.
