Sir Keir took to X to express his outrage, saying, “Absolutely appalling. No one should face violence on our streets. The suspect appears to be motivated by anti-Muslim hatred. I will not tolerate this – he will face the full force of the law.” The Scottish First Minister John Swinney also condemned the violence, emphasizing that there is no place for violence, racism, or intolerance in Scotland.

Police Response and Investigations

Police Scotlandsupported by Counter Terrorism Policing Scotland and the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Serviceswiftly responded to the incidents. A 36-year-old man was arrested around 9.30pm on Friday, and a report was submitted to the Procurator Fiscal. The suspect remains in custody, and inquiries are ongoing.

Assistant Chief Constable Catriona Paton expressed her support for the affected communities, stating, “There is no place for racism or faith-based hate in a Scotland which is at its best when we stand together.” She also thanked the officers for their bravery and professionalism and appealed to the public for any information that could assist with the investigations.

A Major Incident Public Portal (MIPP) has been set up to encourage members of the public to submit information directly to the police. The portal aims to gather any details that could help establish the full circumstances of the attacks.

Omar Afzaldirector of public affairs for the Scottish Association of Mosqueshighlighted the disturbing nature of the incidents and the normalization of anti-Muslim hatred in public discourse.

The Muslim Engagement and Development (Mend) organization urged the police to treat the attacks as Islamophobic, far-right terror. The Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood expressed her horror at the violence and reiterated that there is no place for hatred and violence against Muslims in the country.

The Scottish Government’s Justice Secretary Neil Gray also condemned the attacks, stating that there is no place for racism or faith-based hate in Scotland. He praised the emergency services for their bravery and skill in bringing the incident under control.
