The UK is preparing for a severe heatwave with temperatures potentially reaching 40C, leading to school closures and transport disruptions.

Extreme Heat Alert: UK Faces Potential Record Temperatures This Week

The United Kingdom is bracing for an intense heatwave that could push temperatures to record highs, with forecasts suggesting a scorching 40C in some regions. This extreme weather event, described as a heat-dome over western Europe, is expected to bring unprecedented temperatures for June, surpassing the previous June record set in Hampshire in 1976 and approaching the UK’s all-time high of 40.3C recorded in July 2026.

The Met Office has issued a rare red weather warning for extreme heat, covering areas from London to Swansea and Somerset to Birmingham, from 9am on Wednesday to 9pm on Thursday. This warning signifies severe and significant impacts, including widespread health risks and potential danger to life.

School Closures and Educational Impact

In response to the extreme heat, numerous schools across England and Wales have announced closures or early dismissals. Buckingham School in Buckinghamshire will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday, opting for online learning. The school’s statement highlighted the inadequacy of cooling in most buildings and the lack of shade outside, necessitating the closure.

St John’s Marlborough in Wiltshire will close early on Tuesday and remain shut all day on Wednesday and Thursday. Similarly, The Dorcan Academy in Swindon will finish on-site learning at 11:30am on Tuesday and close for the next two days. Other schools in Sutton, Haringey, and various locations in Wiltshire, Berkshire, Surrey, and London have also announced closures or early dismissals.

The National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) has provided guidance to its members on managing the heat, emphasizing that while there is no legal upper limit for temperature in schools, leaders are taking measures to mitigate the effects. Paul Whiteman NAHT general secretary, noted the efforts to protect pupils and staff from the extreme conditions.

Transport Disruptions and Safety Measures

Transport authorities are advising against non-essential travel as the heatwave is expected to significantly impact rail and road networks. Network Rail has urged passengers to check before traveling on Tuesday and to avoid travel on Wednesday and Thursday within the red warning zone. Jake Kelly deputy chief executive of Network Rail, emphasized the importance of safety, noting that extreme heat can have a substantial impact on the railway.

Transport for London (TfL) has warned of potential disruptions to rail and Tube services due to high temperatures. Claire Mann TfL’s chief operating officer, advised customers to be aware of possible temporary speed restrictions and reduced services. The AA has also cautioned drivers about softened road surfaces and the potential for gritters to be deployed to maintain road conditions.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a red health warning for six regions of England, indicating a risk to life even for the healthy population. This warning highlights the broader impacts on transport systems, food, water, energy supplies, and businesses.

Health Risks and Public Safety

The extreme heat is not only affecting schools and transport but also posing significant health risks. The high temperatures, accompanied by high humidity and very warm nights, make it difficult for people to recover overnight. The UKHSA has emphasized the need for public awareness and precautions to mitigate the health impacts of the heatwave.

In addition to the heatwave, parts of the West Country experienced thunderstorms on Monday evening, with temperatures dropping by four to five degrees. Hundreds of homes in Shepton Mallet, Glastonbury, and Bristol were briefly without power, and Bristol Airport was forced to close due to a fault with Air Traffic Control systems. A house fire in Emersons Green, Bristol, was believed to be caused by a lightning strike, although no injuries were reported.

As the UK prepares for this unprecedented heatwave, authorities and the public are taking steps to ensure safety and minimize disruptions. The collective efforts of schools, transport authorities, and health agencies aim to mitigate the impacts of this extreme weather event.
