Andy Burnham has pledged to uphold the pensions triple lock and shared his views on elections, EU trade, and defence funding in a recent Reddit AMA.

Andy Burnham, the prospective prime minister, has reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining the pensions triple lock despite internal debates within his party. This pledge comes amidst criticism that the scheme disproportionately benefits wealthier pensioners over younger generations.
In a candid Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on Reddit Burnham addressed various topics, including his stance on early elections, EU trade, and defence funding.
His responses provided a glimpse into his policy platform as he prepares for a potential move to No 10 by 20 July.
Pensions Triple Lock: A Commitment That Stands
Burnham acknowledged the controversy surrounding the pensions triple lock but emphasized its importance.
“There is a lot of debate about this pledge,” he admitted, “but it is important that the commitment in the manifesto stands.” Labour’s 2026 manifesto includes the triple lock, which ensures the state pension rises in line with the highest of earnings, prices, or 2.5%.
This commitment has been a cornerstone of Labour’s pension policy, aiming to provide financial security for retirees.
Elections, EU Trade, and Defence Funding
Burnham ruled out the possibility of an early election, stating that he would adhere to the 2026 manifesto. However, he expressed his support for proportional representation a reform he believes will foster a more collaborative political environment. “I am a strong supporter of electoral reform,” he said, “partly because I believe it will enable the change to a more collaborative politics, and one that is less about point-scoring and more about problem-solving.”
On the topic of EU trade, Burnham indicated his openness to negotiating a more ambitious trade agreement. “Yes, there is scope for negotiating a more ambitious trade agreement than the one we currently have,” he stated, pledging to build on the “good work” already done by the government. This stance reflects his pragmatic approach to international relations and economic policy.
Regarding defence funding, Burnham promised to ensure the defence investment plan is “fully funded.” This comes after the recent resignation of John Healey as defence secretary, following the publication of the defence blueprint. Burnham’s commitment to fully funding the defence plan underscores his focus on national security and military preparedness.
Foreign Policy and Personal Interests
Burnham reaffirmed his unwavering support for Ukraine stating, “I back Ukraine 100 per cent.” This strong stance on foreign policy highlights his commitment to international alliances and global stability. He also received a question from Kemi Badenoch the Tory leader, who challenged him to “face a proper press conference.” Burnham responded that this was a “fair challenge” but noted that he had recently faced questions from 74,000 voters ahead of winning the Makerfield by-election.
In a lighter vein, Burnham shared his personal interests, naming his favourite film as the Martin Scorsese mob thriller Goodfellas. He also mentioned his current favourite band, Doves and listed his four favourite films: GoodfellasThe Big ShortBrassed Off and Pride. These personal insights provided a glimpse into the man behind the political figure.
As Burnham prepares for a potential premiership, his policy commitments and personal insights offer a comprehensive view of his leadership style and priorities. From pensions to international relations, his stance reflects a blend of pragmatism and idealism, aimed at addressing the challenges of the modern political landscape.
