An 18-year-old driver, Sonny Horsfall, was sentenced to three years in prison for causing serious injury by dangerous driving and fleeing the scene.

Sonny Horsfall Sentenced for Dangerous Driving and Hit-and-Run in Redcar

An 18-year-old man’s reckless driving ended in tragedy when he struck an 84-year-old pensioner and fled the scene, only to later boast about the incident to his friends. Sonny Horsfall, of Kirkbymoorside, North Yorkshire, was jailed for three years after a court heard the harrowing details of the crash that occurred on April 22 this year in Redcar.

The incident began when Horsfall, who had recently purchased an Audi A4 lost control of the vehicle and mounted the pavement, colliding with Eddie, an 84-year-old man who was walking home. The impact left Eddie with multiple pelvic fractures, fractures to his back, and a broken right foot.

Despite the severity of the injuries, Horsfall did not stop to render aid but instead ordered a pizza and messaged a friend, casually discussing the collision.

The Moment of Impact and Aftermath

The collision was captured on CCTV, showing the Audi A4’s front wheel hanging off and sparks flying from the vehicle.

Eddie was thrown into the air, landing severely injured on the pavement. Neighbors who discovered him lying on the grass immediately called for an ambulance. Eddie was rushed to the hospital, where he underwent major surgery and was placed in intensive care for almost a week.

Meanwhile, Horsfall, who was disqualified from driving and uninsured, fled the scene. He later messaged a friend, saying, “I went skid up the kerb. F*** knows what I hit. Sorry bro, I am eating a pizza.” In another message, he admitted, “Bro, the man got smashed. Like bro, I think I have killed him, me bro, wow.” These messages were later discovered by police, who arrested Horsfall the following day in Malton, North Yorkshire.

The Victim’s Struggle and Recovery

Eddie, who was once completely independent, suffered devastating physical injuries that have significantly impacted his daily life. In a victim impact statement, he expressed his struggle to feel safe even when walking on the pavement. “This incident has caused devastating physical injuries, but its impact goes far beyond the injuries themselves,” Eddie stated. “It has taken away my confidence, my sense of safety, my independence, and, to a large extent, my dignity.”

Eddie’s daughter, Carol, also shared the emotional toll the incident has taken on their family. “Even now, I still struggle with what happened. I do not sleep properly and frequently find myself reliving the events of that night,” she said. “I constantly worry about my dad’s future and what lies ahead for him.”

The Legal Consequences and Public Reaction

At Durham Crown Court, Horsfall pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and without insurance, and failing to stop after a road traffic accident. Judge Christopher Knox described Horsfall’s actions as “wickedness and stupidity,” emphasizing the severe consequences of his reckless behavior.

Detective Constable Rachael Johnson from Cleveland Police highlighted the complete disregard for safety demonstrated by Horsfall. “This was a shocking and wholly avoidable collision which has left an 84-year-old man with serious injuries while simply walking home on the pavement,” she stated. “Sonny Horsfall mounted the pavement striking the victim and rather than remaining at the scene to assist an elderly man who had suffered serious injuries, he chose to think only of himself.”

The court heard that Horsfall had been driving dangerously prior to the collision, filming videos of himself speeding and running red lights. In one video, he boasted, “I’ve just bought this beast” and “smoke ’em boy.” In another, he bragged, “F*** this red light, you’re getting dusted” as he ran through traffic lights.

The sentence handed to Horsfall serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of reckless driving. As Eddie continues his slow recovery, the community hopes that this case will prompt greater awareness of the dangers of dangerous driving.
