After three decades of service, Papyrus Prevention of Young Suicide has entered administration, leaving a significant gap in mental health support for young people in the UK.
The UK has witnessed a significant shift in its mental health landscape with the closure of Papyrus Prevention of Young Suicide. On 07 September 2026 Emma Mifsud and Charles Turner of Opus Restructuring LLP were appointed as Joint Administrators, marking the end of an era for this vital charity.
Papyrus had been a beacon of hope for young people struggling with suicidal thoughts, offering campaign work, education, training, and direct service provision. However, the charity’s Board of Trustees and senior management faced an uphill battle to sustain operations amidst rising demand, increased costs, and dwindling funding.
The Road to Administration
The decision to enter administration was not taken lightly. The Board explored various options, including changes to the operating model, cost reductions, and the possibility of transferring services to other organizations. Despite these efforts, the financial strain proved insurmountable.
The Board concluded that Papyrus could no longer operate in such a challenging climate, leading to the appointment of insolvency practitioners.
The Joint Administrators recognize the charity’s significant contributions and the dedication of its staff, volunteers, trustees, and supporters. Their immediate focus is on managing the charity’s affairs through the administration process and ensuring an orderly closure. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
Impact on Mental Health Services
With the closure of Papyrus, the HopeLine24/7 helpline is no longer operational. This leaves a critical gap in the support network for young people in crisis. However, alternative support services remain available, including Samaritans (116 123), Shout (text SHOUT to 85258), and NHS 111 for urgent mental health support. In emergencies, individuals are advised to call 999 or go to A&E.
The Joint Administrators are currently reviewing the funds held by the charity to determine their allocation. Regular donations to Papyrus should cease, and any queries regarding existing contacts and referrals should be directed to papyrusqueries@.
