Marc Marquez’s title chances took a big step backwards after this morning’s Moto2 FP1 session at Phillip Island, when the Spaniard collided at high speed with Thai rider Ratthapark Wilairot (we did have the video, but you guys know Dorna).
The Catalunya Caixa Repsol rider had already crashed earlier in the session and his team was able to put his Suter bike back together in record time and he returned to the track with less than minute remaining, starting to lap at almost full speed as he past the already waving chequered flag managing to dodge slower Valentin Debise, but ended up colliding with the cruising Thai rider.

Wilairot was transferred to a hospital in Melbourne where he was diagnosed with back and knee injuries, but fortunately no broken bones, while Marquez picked up some scrapes and bruises but was able to ride in FP2 where he finished in 17th.
The Race Direction after studying the incident handed down a one minute penalty to add to Marquez’s qualifying time which will mean he’ll start at the back of the grid on race day.
