Does Marco Melandri bring bad luck? Kawasaki dropped out of MotoGP after he signed up, Yamaha Superbike closed down their Superbike effort after the Italian spent a season with them and now BMW has made a suprise announcement that they will be trimming down their World Superbike efforts in 2013, from two teams to just one, with BMW Italia (currently BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet) to become the factory team.
This cost cutting restructuring announcement comes during one of the best seasons that BMW Motorrad has had, since the arrival of Marco Melandri who brought with him team manager Andrea Dosoli and Italian former Yamaha and their arrival has turned the German team around allowing him to win three races and take three podiums so far, while Leon Haslam has also improved over last season and has aready taken five podiums compared to last year’s total six.
With BMW Italia taking over the effort means that Alpha Racing who helped the factory team start out in 2009 is out, and so could several riders, team managers and mechanics as the rider line-up and the team management will be announced at a later date.
Melandri may continue as he has another year on his contract – contracts are worth bupkus as everyone knows – but Leon Haslam, Michel Fabrizio and Ayrton Badovini may end up battling more off track than on track to keep their rides, while BMW Italia has shown more than a passing interest in securing the talent of Carlos Checa, who seems no longer interested in riding a Ducati.

At the same time, the company is carrying out a strategic realignment and pooling superbike activities.
BMW Motorrad Italia will take responsibility for the factory race and test team as well as for chassis development.
BMW in Munich will be entirely responsible for developing the power train and electronics.
This decision means that BMW Motorrad will continue to operate as a fully integrated team in the World Championship for near-production road motorcycles.
Team name, team management positions and rider line-up for 2013 will be announced later.

The new structure with the focus on one racing team is lean and efficient, the concept is targeted and logical.
We are looking forward to being in a position to develop the existing structures in Munich and Milan.
