The Women’s Super League Football is on a mission to create the most compelling and competitive women’s football league in the world. To achieve this vision, they are seeking a creative storyteller and strategic thinker to join their team as the new Communications Manager.
Based in Central London this role offers the unique opportunity to work at the heart of the organization, collaborating with various departments to promote the Barclays Women’s Super League (BWSL) and the Barclays Women’s Super League 2 (BWSL2).
These competitions represent the pinnacle of women’s professional football in England, and the Communications Manager will play a pivotal role in growing their profile and protecting their reputation.
The Role: Shaping the Narrative of Women’s Football
Reporting directly to the Head of Communications the Communications Manager will work in a fast-paced environment, developing and delivering integrated communications plans and PR campaigns.
The role involves promoting the league across owned and earned channels, managing media requests, and building relationships with clubs, partners, and stakeholders.
Key responsibilities include leading communications for BWSL and BWSL2 media days the secondary competition, and the Play-Off. The Communications Manager will also work closely with the league’s retained PR agency, providing out-of-hours media support, and executing additional tasks as required.
Collaboration and Storytelling
The ideal candidate will collaborate effectively with internal departments such as MarketingContentCommercialBroadcastLeague & Performance Development and Operations. By telling compelling stories associated with these departments, the Communications Manager will generate coverage and achieve joint organizational goals.
Building effective and trusted relationships with the BWSL and BWSL2 club communications teams is also a crucial aspect of the role. The Communications Manager will develop and maintain these relationships, ensuring that the league’s messaging is consistent and impactful.
Requirements: The Ideal Candidate
To excel in this role, the Communications Manager must have extensive experience in media communications and a proven track record in creating and delivering communications strategies. A strong media contacts book and excellent experience in dealing with a broad range of media are essential.
The ideal candidate will have experience in delivering integrated marcomms and PR campaigns with excellent results, as well as the ability to manage communications issues. Operating within a multiple internal and external stakeholder environment is a must, along with a flexible approach to working hours.
Essential Skills and Qualifications
- Excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills
- Excellent writing skills and the ability to write to deadline
- Knowledge of the WSL Football brand and professional sport structures
- Experience of working with senior executives and talent
- Able to conduct UK travel if required
Beneficial Skills and Qualifications
- Over five years’ experience within Communications (high-level experience advantageous)
- Experience of working with an agency
- Understanding of digital communications and other promotional new media platforms

The Women’s Super League Football office is based in Farringdon, Central London. The role is full-time and permanent, requiring the candidate to be in the office two days a week and work on call. There will be occasional out-of-hours work and domestic travel.
