Rhun ap Iorwerth Tackles Tourism, Economy, and Heatwave Concerns in Senedd

The First Minister of Wales, Rhun ap Iorwerth faced a barrage of questions from Senedd members today, addressing critical issues ranging from tourism and economic growth to extreme heat warnings. The session, which began at 1.30pm saw the First Minister fielding inquiries from cross-party members and opposition leaders.

Prior to the session, Mr. ap Iorwerth issued a statement urging caution due to an impending heat warning. He highlighted potential disruptions to transport networks, particularly rail services, and encouraged the public to plan ahead and follow travel advice. He also requested that all Members of the Senedd (MSs) utilize their constituency networks to disseminate public health advice widely.

Tourism and Economic Challenges Take Center Stage

The session kicked off with a question from Helen Jenner Reform UK MS for Bangor Conwy Mon, regarding the 182-day rule for self-catering holiday properties. This rule, which requires properties to be commercially let for a minimum of 182 days per year, has been criticized by tourism operators for making businesses unsustainable.

Ms. Jenner called for an immediate review of this threshold due to the seasonal nature of tourism in Wales.

In response, the First Minister acknowledged the ongoing review of the 182-day threshold but did not commit to immediate changes. He stated that specific proposals would be outlined in due course. Meanwhile, Janet Finch-Saunders Conservative MS, raised concerns about the competitiveness of Wales’ tourism and hospitality sector. She highlighted that 20% of the workforce in her constituency is employed in this sector and called for a 10% VAT rate to provide a much-needed lifeline to businesses.

Economic Disparities and Green Economy Initiatives

John Davies Plaid Cymru MS for Gwyr Abertawe, drew attention to the economic disparities between Cardiff and Swansea. He noted that Swansea had lost 1,349 jobs last year, representing a 1.3% contraction in the workforce since Labour took control in Wales. Additionally, Swansea’s gross value added per capita had dropped from 85% in 1999 to 78% in 2026, while Cardiff stood at 120%. Mr. Davies emphasized the need for long-term solutions to tackle the root causes of these economic challenges.

The First Minister responded by highlighting the potential of the green economy and the government’s efforts to unlock this opportunity. He mentioned the national energy strategy, speeding up planning and consents, and coordinating the delivery of renewable projects in places like Swansea. Steven Rodaway Reform UK MS, also raised the importance of tourism in Gower and asked about other sectors the government would target for economic growth. Mr. ap Iorwerth referenced the city’s university and semiconductor industry, emphasizing the need for stability.

Extreme Heat Warnings and Public Safety

Addressing the extreme heat warning, the First Minister stressed the seriousness of the situation. He noted that heat-related illness can affect anyone, but the risks are greater for older people, babies, and very young children. He urged the public to check in on vulnerable family, friends, and neighbors, as this could be potentially life-saving. Mr. ap Iorwerth also warned against swimming in open cold water, highlighting the danger of cold water shock, and reminded people never to swim in reservoirs.

The Welsh Government has activated a special response team to manage the situation. The First Minister advised the public to follow guidance carefully, plan ahead, and check the latest travel advice due to likely disruptions to transport networks. He concluded by asking all MSs to use their constituency networks to ensure public health advice reaches as many people as possible.
