France kicked off their 2026 World Cup campaign with a 3-1 win over Senegal, thanks to Kylian Mbappe's stellar performance and a crucial goal from Bradley Barcola.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup opened with a bang as France secured a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Senegal in New Jersey. The match, filled with dramatic moments and standout performances, set the stage for an exciting tournament ahead.
Kylian Mbappe was the star of the show, scoring a brace and surpassing Olivier Giroud to become France’s all-time leading goalscorer with 58 goals. His long-range strike in stoppage time sealed the victory and left fans in awe.
France’s Dominant Second Half
After a tense first half where Senegal came close to scoring twice, France took control in the second half. Mbappe broke the deadlock in the 66th minute, guiding Michael Olise’s pass into the bottom corner with a delicate first-time effort.
Just two minutes after coming onto the pitch, substitute Bradley Barcola doubled France’s lead in the 82nd minute. Latching onto Adrien Rabiot’s clever low pass, Barcola chipped the ball over Edouard Mendy to extend France’s advantage.
A chaotic finale saw Ibrahim Mbaye pull one back for Senegal in the fifth minute of added time. However, Mbappe responded one minute later with a fantastic shot from 30 yards out
Senegal’s Early Threats
Senegal started the match strongly, with Nicolas Jackson and Ismaila Sarr creating early chances. Jackson’s low strike rattled a post in the 25th minute, and Sarr fired over the bar on the cusp of half-time.
Despite their early dominance, Senegal struggled to convert their chances into goals. Edouard Mendy made several crucial saves, including a great stop from Mbappe minutes after Olise was denied by a solid stop from the Senegal goalkeeper.
Looking Ahead
France head coach Didier Deschamps expressed relief and satisfaction with the victory. ‘It’s a bit of a relief. We were a little apprehensive at the start. Changing Ousmane Dembele and Michael Olise’s positions made a big difference,’ he said.
Deschamps emphasized the importance of winning the opening match. ‘That’s the magic of football when you get to share those emotions. It’s only the first game but we’re going to enjoy it,’ he added.
Senegal’s former Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy acknowledged the need for improvement. ‘We knew we had to raise our level in the second half and be more clinical going forward. We only managed to do that in spells,’ he told beIN SPORTS.
As the tournament progresses, both teams will look to build on their performances. France will face Iraq next, while Senegal aims to bounce back against Norway.
