Winger Shayden Morris is on a mission to redefine his role at Aberdeen, aspiring to be recognized as a “super-player” rather than just a “super-sub.” The 23-year-old has made a significant impact this season, earning the moniker of super-sub due to his explosive performances off the bench.

His latest contribution came during a thrilling match against Hibernian, where he delivered a stunning cross that led to Ester Sokler’s overhead kick goal, only for the Dons to concede shortly after, resulting in a 3-3 draw.

Determined to make a mark

Morris is eager to establish himself as a key player in the starting lineup under the guidance of manager Jimmy Thelin. He expressed his desire to transition from a substitute role to a more prominent position, stating, “I know that I’ve been called a super-sub, but I want to be a super-player, instead of a super-sub.” Despite acknowledging the strength of the squad and the quality of players ahead of him, Morris remains focused on proving his worth as a starter.

Overcoming challenges and injuries

Having faced significant challenges in the past, including injuries that sidelined him for extended periods, Morris is now thriving. After joining Aberdeen from Fleetwood Town in the summer of 2022, he struggled with a hamstring injury that required surgery, limiting his appearances in his debut season. Last season, he faced another setback with a different leg injury. However, Morris has emerged stronger, stating, “I do feel really happy now. It’s not been like I’ve come in and it’s been up – it’s also been really down for me. So to be up now is a really, really nice feeling.” His resilience and determination to contribute to the team have been evident in his recent performances.

Looking ahead to future matches

As Aberdeen prepares to face Hearts at Tynecastle, Morris is keen to help the team break a two-game winless streak. Reflecting on the emotional rollercoaster of the recent match against Hibs, he noted, “It was mad to be fair, the emotions – definitely a high to a low in just a minute.” Despite the disappointment of conceding late, Morris remains optimistic about the team’s prospects, emphasizing their strong position in the league and their collective goal to win every match. He stated, “We want to win every game we play – like anyone else. We’re just going back into Sunday with full faith to get the three points.” Morris’s journey from a super-sub to a super-player is just beginning, and his determination to succeed is palpable.
