For those seeking a unique getaway, the Isle of Harris offers a luxurious three-bedroom family home available for rent at £1,950 per week. Nestled in the picturesque landscape, Baile An Or at Ardslave is not just a rental property; it is a dream home for an Aberdeenshire family with deep connections to the island.
A landmark of charm and beauty
As you approach the property, an unusual blue hare sculpture marks the way from the roadside, quickly becoming a local landmark. Located approximately nine miles south of Tarbert, this stunning home is owned by Steven Mearns, an accountant and tax consultant, and his wife Laura, an estate agent specializing in property rentals.
Their vision for Baile An Or was to create a space that feels like home, reflecting their family’s love for the island.
A family legacy and a rental opportunity
Steven Mearns has cherished memories of visiting Harris since childhood, with family ties tracing back to Leverburgh on the west coast. He expressed, “It has been a dream of mine to have a home on Harris.” While the family is not ready to relocate permanently due to their children’s schooling, they have decided to share their beautiful creation with others by renting it out when not in use. This allows guests to experience the charm and tranquility of Harris.
Architectural brilliance and modern comforts
Designed by architect Ian MacDonald and constructed by Roy Grant, Baile An Or features an innovative “upside-down” layout. The lower floor houses the bedrooms and utility room, while the upper floor boasts an open-plan living area with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding peninsula. This design not only maximizes space but also enhances the experience of living in such a stunning location.
Mr. Mearns shared insights into the construction process, noting that they purchased the plot about seven years ago and had a smooth building experience thanks to local builders from Aboyne. “The build was thankfully easy, as we have friends in Aboyne who are builders,” he explained. The project took several months, during which the builders stayed locally on Harris, contributing to the community.
Building a future on Harris
In addition to their family home, Mr. Mearns has expanded his business presence on the island by opening a branch of Tax Assist Accountants in the garden of Baile An Or. With three clients already on the island, he is committed to building a future for his family in this idyllic location. “It is all building the future for us as a family on the island,” he stated.
Renting Baile An Or is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the beauty of the Isle of Harris, with prices starting from £1,950 in the low season and rising to £2,450 during the summer months. A £100 discount is available for stays of two weeks or more. For those interested in experiencing this luxurious family home, more information can be found on the house’s website.
