Severe weather disrupts ferry services across Scotland

Windy conditions lead to significant travel disruptions for holiday travelers in Scotland.

Ferries in Scotland face disruptions due to severe weather conditions.

This weekend, travelers in Scotland are facing significant disruptions due to severe windy weather, which has led to the cancellation, delay, and amendment of ferry services. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for strong winds affecting most parts of Scotland, forecasting gusts reaching up to 70mph in coastal regions, particularly across the Highlands, Aberdeenshire, and Moray.

Impact on holiday travel plans

The timing of this weather event is particularly unfortunate, as many individuals were planning to return home for Christmas. With the warning in effect until 9pm on Sunday, December 22, the adverse weather conditions have dampened the holiday spirit for numerous travelers.

NorthLink Ferries, which operates routes between Aberdeen and the Orkney and Shetland Islands, has announced the cancellation of several sailings on Saturday. Notably, the 7pm sailing from Lerwick to Aberdeen has been scrapped, and the 5pm ferry from Aberdeen will only make a stop at Kirkwall, omitting its usual continuation to Lerwick.

NorthLink and CalMac services affected

In addition to NorthLink’s cancellations, the MV Hjatland is scheduled to return to Aberdeen from Lerwick at 1am on Sunday, but travelers are warned that this service may also experience delays. The situation has left many passengers stranded, with limited options to reach their destinations. Furthermore, all Saturday afternoon sailings between Scrabster and Stromness have been canceled, along with all Sunday services, including freight operations.

CalMac routes also disrupted

On the West Coast, CalMac has reported that every one of its 30 routes has been impacted by the severe weather. Key ferry services connecting the mainland to Stornoway in the Outer Hebrides have been canceled for the remainder of Saturday. This includes vital routes such as Ullapool to Skye, as well as services to smaller island communities like Mull, Raasay, and Colonsay. Travelers are advised to check the CalMac website for updates on cancellations and service alterations.

As the holiday season approaches, the ongoing weather conditions serve as a reminder of the unpredictability of travel during winter months. Passengers are encouraged to stay informed through the respective ferry operators’ websites to navigate these disruptions effectively.
