Burghmuir Drive roadworks aim to improve safety for schoolchildren.

Topics covered
Inverurie is set to witness significant improvements in pedestrian safety with the upcoming installation of a light-controlled crossing on Burghmuir Drive. This busy thoroughfare, which serves as a primary route for children heading to Strathburn School, has long been a concern for parents and local authorities alike.
The existing zebra crossing has been criticized for its inadequacy in handling the high volume of traffic, leading to numerous near misses.
Traffic disruptions during essential roadworks
The roadworks are scheduled to commence soon, necessitating a four-day closure of Burghmuir Drive.
Additionally, Brandsbutt will be closed at its junction with Burghmuir Drive for three weeks starting from October 10. These closures are essential to facilitate the installation of the new crossing, which will be located near the junction with Old Chapel Road and the footpath leading to the primary school.
Community response and safety concerns
Local residents have expressed their relief and support for the new crossing. One mother, speaking to The P&J, emphasized the urgent need for a safer crossing, stating, “Burghmuir Drive is a really busy road in Inverurie, yet one that many children need to cross to get to school.” The mother highlighted the dangers posed by the current zebra crossing, which has proven inadequate for the traffic levels, resulting in many close calls.
Support from local officials
Councillor Marion Ewenson has voiced her enthusiasm for the project, urging residents to remain patient during the disruption. She took to social media to express her happiness about the upcoming works, stating, “I can’t express how happy this makes me! Please be patient while this essential work is carried out.” The installation of the light-controlled crossing is expected to significantly enhance safety for schoolchildren and other pedestrians in the area.
Traffic management and access during construction
As the roadworks progress, Aberdeenshire Council has confirmed that Burghmuir Drive will be closed from the junction with North Street to the footpath between January 22 and January 25. During this period, a diversion will be implemented via North Street and Blackhall Road to manage traffic flow. Emergency services and residents requiring access to properties will still be accommodated during the construction phase.
The community eagerly anticipates the completion of this project, which promises to make Burghmuir Drive a safer environment for all, particularly for the children who rely on this route to reach their school.
