Kieran Phillips has arrived at Ross County with renewed energy and confidence, following a transformative period in the United States with Sacramento Republic. The forward, who recently signed a two-year deal with the Staggies, is eager to make his mark in Scottish football after a fruitful spell abroad.

A fruitful spell in America

Phillips joined Ross County after a successful loan stint in the USL Championship, where he scored an impressive 15 goals in 31 appearances. This experience, which he described as a “working holiday,” allowed him to showcase his skills and regain his form after a challenging few years in England.

“It was perfect for me and it was definitely what I needed at that point in time,” Phillips reflected, emphasizing the positive impact of his time in Sacramento.

Overcoming adversity

Before his success in the US, Phillips faced significant challenges in his career, including a severe injury at the age of 16 that required operations on both knees. This setback left him unable to walk for an extended period, casting doubt on his future in football. However, Phillips credits this difficult time with shaping him into a stronger player. “I had to have an operation on both of my knees at the same time. The recovery was 12 weeks of nothing,” he recalled. “But you grow from it and become stronger as a person. It stands me in good stead for what I’m doing now.” His resilience has clearly paid off, as he now feels physically stronger and more capable than ever.

New beginnings in Dingwall

Phillips’ move to Ross County was first discussed last summer, but he was committed to finishing his season in America. The persistence of Staggies manager Don Cowie ultimately convinced him that Dingwall was the right destination. “It’s always nice to be wanted. That makes it the first place you want to go, really,” he stated. Having made his debut against Celtic, where he won a penalty, Phillips is now looking forward to potentially starting in the upcoming Scottish Cup match against Livingston. His journey from injury to opportunity serves as an inspiration for many, showcasing the power of perseverance and the importance of seizing new opportunities.
