Ross County’s transfer strategy: Navigating player departures and arrivals
In the midst of the January transfer window, Ross County’s manager, Don Cowie, has confirmed that two players are currently in discussions with other clubs regarding potential moves away from the club.

This announcement comes as Cowie has already made significant changes to his squad, adding four new players to bolster the team’s performance for the remainder of the season.

Recent squad additions

Last week, Cowie welcomed defensive duo Zac Ashworth and Jonathan Tomkinson on loan, following the earlier signings of Nohan Kenneh and Kieran Phillips.

These additions have reshaped the squad dynamics, pushing several players further down the pecking order. Cowie is keen on optimizing his squad to ensure competitiveness as the season progresses.

Potential player exits

While the departures of Eamonn Brophy and Max Sheaf have already been confirmed, Cowie hinted at the possibility of two more players leaving the club this week. Although he refrained from naming the individuals involved, he expressed that the club has granted them permission to explore opportunities that would allow them to secure more regular playing time. Cowie stated, “It’s still very early, but we’ve given them permission to speak to clubs that would put them in a better position to play regular football.” This approach reflects Cowie’s commitment to player development and ensuring that individuals have the opportunity to thrive in their careers.

Strengthening the defense

In addition to potential departures, Cowie has confirmed the recall of teenage defender Dylan Smith from his loan at Arbroath. The 18-year-old has had a successful stint at the League One leaders, making 12 appearances. Cowie emphasized the importance of having sufficient defensive cover as the season enters its second half, especially with injuries affecting key players like Ricki Lamie and Will Nightingale. “We have to make sure we are best prepared for that moving into the second part of the season,” Cowie noted, highlighting the strategic planning involved in squad management.

Looking ahead

As the transfer window progresses, Cowie remains optimistic about the depth and competition within his squad. He acknowledged the challenges posed by injuries but expressed confidence in the players currently available. “We are in a really good place in terms of the numbers we’ve got in that area,” he remarked, indicating a positive outlook for the team’s performance moving forward. With the right balance of new talent and existing players, Ross County aims to navigate the remainder of the season effectively.
