In a significant leadership transition, Sir Ian Wood has announced his decision to step down as chairman of The Wood Foundation after nearly two decades of dedicated service. Founded in 2007, the charity has made substantial contributions to communities in Sub-Saharan Africa and Scotland, focusing on transformative initiatives that empower individuals and foster sustainable development.

Legacy of transformation and impact

Reflecting on his tenure, Sir Ian described his role as “an immense privilege,” highlighting the profound impact the foundation has had on countless lives. Under his leadership, The Wood Foundation has initiated various programs, including support for tea farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa and educational initiatives in Scotland.

One of the notable investments was the development of the Lady Helen Parking Centre at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, a project that underscores the foundation’s commitment to enhancing local infrastructure.

Garreth Wood takes the helm

Sir Ian’s son, Garreth Wood, will succeed him as chairman. Currently serving as chairman of Kids Operating Room, a charity focused on providing life-saving surgeries for children, Garreth brings a wealth of experience in leading international non-governmental organizations. Sir Ian expressed confidence in Garreth’s ability to guide The Wood Foundation into its next chapter, stating, “His experience, values, and dedication make him the ideal person to guide The Wood Foundation’s future.”

Continuing the mission of empowerment

The Wood Foundation has been instrumental in fostering youth engagement through initiatives like the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI), which has granted over £7.6 million to various charities, driven by the efforts of more than 350,000 young people. As Garreth steps into his new role, he is committed to continuing this legacy of empowerment and sustainable opportunity creation. “It is an honour to follow in my father’s footsteps as chairman of The Wood Foundation,” he remarked, expressing his eagerness to build upon the foundation’s successes.

While Sir Ian steps down from his leadership role, he will remain closely connected to the organization as its founder and president, continuing to serve as a trustee alongside Lady Helen Wood and Graham Good. This transition marks not just a change in leadership but a continuation of a vision that aims to resonate for generations to come.
