Brora Rangers aim to maintain league lead with new striker Matthew Wright's arrival.

Topics covered
In a strategic move to enhance their attacking capabilities, Brora Rangers have secured the signing of striker Matthew Wright from Nairn County. This acquisition comes just ahead of their pivotal clash against Fraserburgh, as the Cattachs aim to maintain their position at the top of the Breedon Highland League.
Wright’s journey and potential impact
Matthew Wright, a 22-year-old forward, began his career at Ross County and had a successful loan spell at Brora from August 2021 to January 2022, where he netted an impressive 21 goals.
Since then, he has played for several clubs, including Montrose, Falkirk, and Elgin City, before joining Nairn County last summer, where he scored nine goals. With Brora’s captain Jordan MacRae sidelined for the remainder of the season, manager Steven Mackay is optimistic that Wright’s natural goal-scoring ability will provide the team with the boost they need.
Manager’s confidence in Wright’s abilities
Mackay expressed his enthusiasm about Wright’s return, stating, “Matthew is similar to Jordan in the respect that he’s hungry for goals. He won’t go wandering around the pitch; he gets in the box and will sniff out opportunities. That’s what we need.” The manager emphasized that while other players have filled the number nine position, none have done so as naturally as Wright. He believes that with a stable environment at Brora, Wright can thrive and contribute significantly to the team’s success.
Upcoming challenges and league dynamics
As Brora prepares for their match against Fraserburgh, Mackay acknowledges the challenges ahead. “Fraserburgh are always a dangerous side, but it’s one of these games where you need to find a way to get a result, particularly at this stage of the season,” he noted. With 14 games remaining, every match is crucial for maintaining their lead in the league. Meanwhile, Fraserburgh’s assistant manager James Duthie is also gearing up for the encounter, hoping to build on their recent successes, including a notable Scottish Cup tie against Rangers.
Other league updates and player movements
In addition to Brora’s signing, other teams in the Highland League are making moves to strengthen their squads. Turriff United has welcomed defender Glen Donald on a three-and-a-half-year deal, while Huntly’s James Connelly aims to help his team secure a top-six finish. As the league progresses, teams are keenly aware that every match could significantly impact their standings, making the upcoming fixtures all the more critical.
