Experience the perfect blend of nature and luxury at Mayen Estate.

As we age, the number of new experiences we encounter tends to dwindle. However, a recent family trip to Moray reignited that sense of wonder. Our journey took us from Aberdeen to Rothiemay, where we found ourselves at Butlers Cottage, nestled within the expansive Mayen Estate.
This picturesque location is not just a feast for the eyes, with its Highland cows and lush gardens, but also a haven for relaxation and adventure.
A warm welcome and a cozy retreat
Upon arrival, we were greeted by Ross McIntosh, who provided a warm welcome and a tour of the charming, rose-covered cottage.
Dating back to 1788, Butlers Cottage has been beautifully renovated, merging modern comforts with traditional charm. The amenities, including a hot tub, fire pit, and pizza oven, promised a delightful stay. The cottage’s interior, featuring wood-burning fires and underfloor heating, ensured we were cozy during our three-night retreat.
Unique experiences amidst nature
One of the highlights of our stay was the opportunity to observe Highland cows up close. My daughter was captivated, spending hours watching these gentle giants and attempting to feed them grass. The tranquility of the countryside was palpable, with clear skies and the soothing sounds of nature, occasionally interrupted by the cows’ soft moos. Another first for me was cooking pizza in the cottage’s pizza oven, using fresh ingredients sourced from the estate’s own walled garden. The experience was not only fun but also delicious, as we crafted authentic pizzas together.
Fishing adventures and family bonding
The pinnacle of our trip was a morning of fishing guided by our knowledgeable ghillie, Kevin Barron. Having never held a fishing rod before, I was apprehensive yet excited. Kevin’s passion for fishing was infectious, and he taught us the art of casting with patience and expertise. The experience was therapeutic, allowing me to focus solely on the rhythm of fishing, surrounded by the serene beauty of the River Deveron. To my surprise, I caught a 3lb brown trout, while my son celebrated landing a 7lb salmon, marking a memorable moment for both of us.
Creating lasting memories
After our fishing adventure, we enjoyed a delightful picnic by the river, sharing stories and savoring local snacks. Each evening was spent relaxing in the hot tub, under a canopy of stars, reflecting on our day’s adventures. The Mayen Estate offers a variety of self-catering accommodations, making it an ideal destination for families, couples, or groups of friends. With activities like clay pigeon shooting available, there’s something for everyone.
As we packed to leave, my daughter’s heartfelt declaration, “You’ll have to prise me off the wall,” echoed our sentiments perfectly. Our time at Butlers Cottage was filled with joy, laughter, and unforgettable firsts. Rates for Butlers Cottage start from £197 per night, with a minimum three-night stay.
