In the picturesque village of Glencoe, a beloved café and gift shop, Crafts and Things, has recently come under new ownership. Jack Dewey, alongside his parents Debbie and Andrew, has taken the reins of this cherished establishment, which has been a staple of the community since its inception in 1968.

With a commitment to maintaining the café’s heart and soul, the Dewey family aims to serve up the same delicious cakes and soups that have delighted locals for decades.

Modernizing a community favorite

At just 26 years old, Jack Dewey brings a fresh perspective to the café, having transitioned from a career in human resources in London to managing this iconic venue.

He expresses enthusiasm for the warm welcome the family has received since moving to Glencoe. “Crafts and Things has a great character,” he shares, noting the community’s eagerness to learn about the new owners’ plans. While many locals have requested minimal changes, Jack assures them that the essence of the café will remain intact.

“For almost 60 years, Crafts and Things has been serving up what people want, and we don’t want to change too much,” he emphasizes. However, he acknowledges the need for some modernization to keep pace with evolving customer expectations. The café, which boasts around 60 seats indoors and additional outdoor seating, will undergo thoughtful updates that respect its long-standing traditions.

Community collaboration and local flavors

Jack is keen on involving both staff and customers in the decision-making process regarding any changes. “Any changes will be in collaboration with the staff, and we want customers to tell us what they would like to see too,” he states. This collaborative approach not only honors the café’s legacy but also fosters a sense of community ownership among patrons.

Known for its hearty soups, toasties, and an impressive array of cakes, including the much-loved banoffee pie, Crafts and Things has established itself as a culinary destination. Jack highlights the café’s commitment to local suppliers, stating, “We have a great range of items in the shop, and we want to continue to work with local suppliers. That is what people want to buy.” This dedication to local sourcing not only supports the community but also enhances the café’s unique offerings.

A family dream realized

The Dewey family’s journey to owning Crafts and Things is a testament to their love for the West Highlands and their desire to run a family business. Jack reflects on the significant shift from his corporate HR role to the vibrant world of café management, expressing joy in the change. “It has been a real shift in landscape for me, but as someone who enjoys the outdoors, it has been a positive move,” he shares.

As Crafts and Things continues to serve the Glencoe community, the Dewey family is committed to preserving its rich history while embracing the future. With plans to modernize the café and gift shop, they aim to ensure that this beloved institution remains a central part of Glencoe life for many years to come.
