In a heart-wrenching incident that has shaken the Isle of Lewis, the community has come together to support the family of Jodie Mitchell, a 32-year-old mother who tragically lost her life after being struck by a van.

The accident occurred on the A858 at North Shawbost on Friday afternoon, around PM, leading to an outpouring of grief and support from locals.

Fundraising efforts exceed expectations

In the wake of this devastating event, a fundraiser was launched online to assist Jodie’s family during this incredibly difficult time.

Within just 24 hours, the campaign has raised over £32,000, showcasing the generosity and compassion of the island’s residents. Hundreds of individuals have contributed, demonstrating a strong sense of community solidarity.

Laura Stewart, the organizer of the fundraiser, expressed her heartfelt gratitude on the fundraising page, stating, “In the event of Friday’s tragic event, we would all like to show the family our support.” She emphasized the importance of helping the family cover any financial burdens they may face as they navigate their profound loss.

A community united in grief

As news of Jodie’s passing spread, many took to social media to share their condolences and memories of her. Described as a “beautiful mum, daughter, sister, auntie, cousin, and friend,” Jodie’s impact on those around her was evident. Laura later shared, “There are no words for the generosity of this island. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart. Dina and family will be so grateful. Love to you all.” This sentiment reflects the deep connections within the community, where residents often come together in times of need.

Ongoing police investigation

As the community mourns, a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident is underway. Sergeant Neil Macdonald has urged anyone who was driving in the area at the time of the crash to come forward. He stated, “We are keen to speak to anyone driving on the road around the time of the crash to get in touch. Please also check your dash-cams and if you have any footage that could help with our investigation then make contact with officers.”
