Revitalization of Tarlair Pools: A community’s dream comes true
The long-awaited transformation of Tarlair Pools in Macduff is finally taking shape, as the community group Friends of Tarlair embarks on a journey to restore this cherished landmark. After more than a decade of dedicated efforts, the group is now actively seeking staff for a new café that will soon open in the renovated pavilion.
This revitalization project not only aims to restore the physical space but also to rekindle the community spirit that once thrived at this iconic lido.
A historical gem in need of revival
Originally opened in the 1930s, Tarlair Pools was a bustling hub for visitors, attracting thousands each year with its stunning Art Deco architecture and vibrant atmosphere.
However, the site fell into disrepair, leading to its closure in 1996. Over the years, various attempts to revive the lido were made, but it wasn’t until the formation of the Friends of Tarlair that a structured plan began to take shape. The group has worked tirelessly to raise funds and garner community support, and their efforts are now bearing fruit.
Transformative renovations underway
Last year marked a significant turning point as renovations commenced on the pavilion. The once-dilapidated structure has undergone a remarkable transformation, shedding its graffiti-covered walls for a fresh, clean look that pays homage to its Art Deco roots. The addition of a poolside café is particularly exciting, with plans for it to open soon, pending the recruitment of staff. Pat Wain, chairwoman of Friends of Tarlair, expressed optimism about the café’s potential, stating that it could serve as a versatile space for music lessons and even as a wedding venue in the future.
Future plans and community involvement
The revitalization of Tarlair Pools extends beyond the pavilion. Plans are in motion to rejuvenate the boating, paddling, and swimming areas that once served as the heart of the community. However, the original changing rooms are deemed beyond repair and will need to be demolished for safety reasons. The group is currently awaiting news on funding applications, which will determine the next steps in the planning process. With a potential 99-year lease agreement with Aberdeenshire Council, the Friends of Tarlair are poised to make significant strides in the coming months.
As the community rallies around this project, the hope is to see Tarlair Pools restored to its former glory by the end of 2025. The journey has been long, but with continued support and dedication, the dream of a revitalized Tarlair Pools is closer than ever to becoming a reality.
