A tragic incident unfolded on the Isle of Lewis on Friday afternoon, resulting in the death of a female pedestrian. The accident occurred around PM on the A858 road at North Shawbost, where a van collided with the pedestrian. Emergency services were promptly dispatched to the scene, and the victim was transported to Western Isles Hospital.

Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival.

Victim identified as local resident

The deceased has been identified as Jodie Mitchell, a resident of South Bragar. The community is mourning the loss of a beloved member, and local authorities have expressed their condolences to her family.

Sergeant Neil Macdonald of the local police stated, “Our thoughts are with Jodie’s family, and they have asked for privacy at this difficult time.” The impact of this tragedy resonates deeply within the community, highlighting the need for road safety awareness.

Investigation and road closure

Following the accident, the A858 was closed for approximately 12 hours to facilitate a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. The road was reopened around AM on Saturday. Authorities are keen to gather more information and are urging anyone who was driving in the area at the time of the incident to come forward. “Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances, and we are eager to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the crash,” Sergeant Macdonald added.

In an effort to piece together the events leading up to the accident, police are requesting that drivers check their dash-cams for any relevant footage. If anyone has recordings that could assist in the investigation, they are encouraged to contact Police Scotland at 101, quoting incident number 2602 from Friday, February 7.
