In a striking display of community spirit, hundreds of residents in Huntly have come together to support Barron Automotive, a family-run garage facing an uncertain future due to a recent council decision. The Aberdeenshire Council has denied the garage’s request to operate from its long-standing location on Meadow Street, following complaints from neighbors regarding noise levels emanating from the workshop.

Background of the dispute

The conflict began when Barron Automotive inadvertently neglected to apply for the necessary documentation to officially operate their workshop as a business. This oversight led to a flurry of objections from local residents, some of whom described the noise as “horrendous” and expressed a desire to relocate due to the disturbances.

As a result, the council rejected the application, leaving the future of the garage in jeopardy.

Community support and petition

In response to the council’s decision, a petition was launched on social media to “Keep Barron Automotive open on Meadow Street.” Within hours, hundreds of supporters had signed the petition, demonstrating the strong backing the garage has from the community. Managing Director Nikki Dunbar expressed her gratitude, stating that the overwhelming support from residents has been a source of comfort during this challenging time.

Plans for appeal and future operations

Despite the setback, Barron Automotive is not backing down. Nikki Dunbar announced that the garage plans to appeal the council’s decision and will continue to operate for an additional three months while the appeal process unfolds. She emphasized the family’s long-standing history in the community, noting that the Barron family has been serving Huntly for over 90 years and hopes to pass the business down to the next generation.

Nikki also highlighted the importance of communication, stating, “We would have loved to have been given the opportunity to rectify any issues had we been contacted and given the option to do so.” She believes that a simple mediation could have resolved the complaints without escalating to this level.

The community’s support for Barron Automotive reflects a broader sentiment about the importance of local businesses and the need for constructive dialogue between residents and local authorities. As the appeal process begins, many in Huntly are hopeful that a resolution can be reached that allows Barron Automotive to continue its operations and serve the community for many more years to come.
