Jordan Amissah, the 23-year-old goalkeeper for Ross County, has found a new lease on life in Scottish football after a tumultuous period without a club. Born in Germany and having honed his skills at prestigious youth academies like Schalke 04 and Borussia Dortmund, Amissah’s journey has been anything but straightforward.

After leaving Sheffield United last summer, he faced uncertainty but remained determined to find his footing in the sport.

From free agent to key player

Amissah’s career took a significant turn when he signed a short-term contract with Ross County in December, stepping in as the first-choice goalkeeper due to an injury to Ross Laidlaw.

His impressive performances quickly caught the attention of manager Don Cowie, leading to an extended contract that solidified his position within the team. Reflecting on his transition, Amissah stated, “If you had asked me at the start of December whether two months later I would be playing at Ibrox, I would probably have laughed at the suggestion.” This newfound opportunity has reignited his passion for the game.

Adapting to the Scottish weather

One of the most significant adjustments for Amissah has been coping with the harsh Scottish winter. He recalls his first home game against Hearts, where the wind played havoc with his goal kicks. “In the first half, all my goal kicks were going out for goal kicks at the other end because the wind kept carrying it,” he explained. Despite the challenges, he finds joy in the unpredictability of the weather, stating, “It is enjoyable, but it is also tough. That’s part of football and it’s the career path I’ve chosen.” His resilience was tested during a memorable match against Aberdeen, where snow and poor visibility made for a challenging environment.

Looking ahead with confidence

As Ross County prepares for a series of crucial matches, including games against Motherwell, Dundee, and St Johnstone, Amissah is optimistic about the team’s prospects. He believes that the upcoming fixtures present a great opportunity for the team to showcase their abilities. “We’ve now got a good run of games where I fancy us to pick up points. It’s a great, competitive league,” he noted. His confidence stems from the hard work he has put in during his time away from the pitch, ensuring he remained fit and ready for the chance to prove himself.

Amissah’s journey is a testament to perseverance and belief in one’s abilities. As he continues to make a name for himself in Scottish football, he cherishes the opportunity to contribute to Ross County’s success and fulfill his childhood dreams of making crucial saves in high-stakes matches.
