Scottish teacher breaks weightlifting record, lifts over 245kg
In a remarkable display of strength and determination, Graeme Reid, a 47-year-old teacher from Elgin, has shattered the Scottish weightlifting record by lifting an astonishing 245 kilograms. This feat is equivalent to the weight of two baby elephants, each weighing between 90 to 113 kilograms.
Reid’s journey into the world of powerlifting began six years ago, and since then, he has achieved numerous accolades, including a gold medal at the European Bench Press Championships last year.
From classroom to competition
Reid, who is part of the Moray Social, Emotional and Behavioural Needs team, balances his teaching career with his passion for powerlifting.
His recent triumph at the British Championships not only solidified his title but also showcased his incredible strength. “I always think about my daughter and my mum who is no longer here when I sit on the platform,” Reid shared, emphasizing the emotional motivation behind his lifts. His training takes place at The Rusty Barbell gym in Elgin, where he is coached by Mike Gibson and Martin Marshall.
Setting records and breaking barriers
During the recent IPF British Equipped Bench Press competition held in Newark, Reid’s performance was nothing short of spectacular. He began with a successful lift of 230kg, which he later deemed too light. He then matched his personal best and Scottish record of 240kg before attempting the record-breaking lift of 245kg. “I’m 46 and you should be getting weaker, but at every competition, we seem to be getting up to five kilos more,” he remarked, highlighting his continuous improvement.
Aiming for the world stage
Reid’s success has earned him a spot on Team GB for the World Bench Press Championships for the third time. With aspirations to improve his personal best and secure a podium finish, he reflects on his previous placements: sixth and fourth. “I’d certainly hope to extend my own personal best and my record. But what I’d like to do is get on the podium,” he stated, expressing his determination to achieve this goal. Reid’s journey is not just about lifting weights; it’s about inspiring others and proving that age is just a number in the world of competitive sports.
