Remembering Dr. Stuart Duncan: A Life of Service and Dedication
Dr. Stuart Duncan, a cherished figure in the community of Peterculter, passed away peacefully at the age of 83, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and dedication. His life was a remarkable blend of medicine, farming, and community service, making him a beloved figure among his patients and neighbors alike.

A Journey Through Life

Born on September 7, 1941, in Banff, Stuart was the only son of Agnes and Eric Duncan, a community doctor. His early years were spent in Banff before the family relocated to Bieldside and later Greenock, where his father served as a medical officer for public health.

The family eventually settled in Peterculter in the early 1950s, where Stuart’s father took over a medical practice. Inspired by his parents, Stuart pursued a career in medicine, studying at Aberdeen University, where he excelled both academically and athletically.

Building a Medical Legacy

After marrying Irene Robertson in 1966, Stuart began his medical career at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary before joining his father’s practice in Peterculter. Together, they established the Peterculter Medical Practice in 1972, pioneering a model of integrated healthcare that served the community for decades. Stuart was known for his unwavering commitment to his patients, often going above and beyond to provide care, whether it was responding to late-night calls or simply taking the time to listen to their concerns.

A Life of Balance: Farming and Community Engagement

In addition to his medical career, Stuart embraced farming when he and Irene took over Kennerty Farm in 1975. They raised beef cattle and sheep, balancing their agricultural pursuits with Stuart’s medical practice. His love for farming was evident during the harvest season, where he would rally local community members to help. Beyond farming, Stuart was actively involved in various community organizations, including Tenovus Scotland and the Aberdeen Medico-Chirurgical Society, showcasing his dedication to improving healthcare and supporting local initiatives.

A Passion for Curling and Classic Vehicles

Stuart’s interests extended beyond medicine and farming; he was also an avid curler. His participation in the Scottish Men’s Swiss Tour in 1998 was a highlight of his curling career, despite the challenges faced during the trip. His childhood passion for classic vehicles led to many adventures with his sons, fostering lasting friendships and creating cherished memories.

A Legacy of Love and Community

Stuart and Irene’s home at Kennerty was a gathering place for family and friends, filled with laughter and joy, especially with the arrival of their eight grandchildren. Even after Irene’s passing in 2023, Stuart remained surrounded by a supportive network of family and friends, who appreciated his warmth and humor. His passing on February 3, 2023, marked the end of an era for the Peterculter community, which came together to celebrate his life during a heartfelt funeral service.

Dr. Stuart Duncan’s legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched as a doctor, friend, and neighbor. His commitment to service, compassion for others, and dedication to his community will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
