Discover how independent shops like Bee Crafty are revitalizing Elgin's community.

Topics covered
In recent years, the landscape of retail has been evolving, with independent businesses gaining traction in various towns and cities. Elgin, a charming town in Scotland, is no exception. South Street has emerged as a vibrant hub for independent shops, offering a unique shopping experience that contrasts with the traditional High Street.
Among these businesses is Bee Crafty, a craft shop owned by Fiona Morran, who transitioned from nursing to entrepreneurship.
Bee Crafty: A unique addition to South Street
Fiona Morran took over Bee Crafty about a year ago, bringing her passion for crafting to the forefront of her new venture.
Despite the challenges that come with running a business for the first time, Fiona has found joy in her role as a shop owner. She believes that South Street is the perfect location for her craft store, surrounded by a variety of independent businesses that foster a sense of community.
“I like being on South Street and I feel like it’s better than the High Street because it’s fully occupied with independent shops,” Fiona explains. This sentiment is echoed by many local business owners who appreciate the collaborative spirit that thrives in this part of Elgin. The ongoing regeneration projects, including the transformation of the Gordon and MacPhail building and the redevelopment of Junners Jailhouse, further enhance the appeal of South Street.
A community of support among local businesses
One of the standout features of South Street is the camaraderie among its independent shops. Fiona emphasizes the importance of supporting one another, stating, “If I don’t have something in stock, I recommend other shops like 24 Yarns or Enchanted Highlands. We all help each other on South Street.” This collaborative approach not only strengthens individual businesses but also enriches the overall shopping experience for customers.
Bee Crafty attracts a diverse clientele, drawing shoppers from Moray and beyond. Fiona recalls a recent visit from a mother and daughter from Glasgow who were impressed by the unique offerings of her shop. “They bought over £100 worth of items for the daughter’s university project, which was amazing,” she shares. Such interactions highlight the significance of independent shops in providing products that cater to specific needs, something that larger retailers often overlook.
The challenges and rewards of entrepreneurship
Transitioning from a structured nursing career to the unpredictable world of retail has been a significant change for Fiona. “Nursing involved 12-hour shifts, and when I came home, I would more or less forget about work. But with this business, I wake up in the morning thinking about orders, pricing, and everything else—it’s 24/7,” she admits. Despite the demands, Fiona finds fulfillment in her work, feeling that she is contributing to the community through her shop.
Bee Crafty offers a wide range of crafting materials and is open Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm at 20 South Street. As Fiona continues to navigate the challenges of entrepreneurship, her commitment to her craft and her community remains unwavering. The success of Bee Crafty is a testament to the thriving independent business scene on South Street, showcasing the potential for growth and collaboration in Elgin.
