Mary White’s 100th birthday celebration

Mary White, a vibrant resident of Fraserburgh, recently celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by loved ones. The milestone was marked with a surprise party at her home, where friends and family gathered to honor her remarkable life.

Her son, Brian White, noted that Mary had an inkling something special was planned, showcasing her sharp mind even at this age. “Nothing gets past her,” he remarked, highlighting her alertness and inquisitive nature.

A letter from the King

As part of her birthday celebrations, Mary received a congratulatory letter from the King, a gesture that added to the significance of the day.

Reflecting on the event, Mary expressed her joy, stating, “I had a lovely time. It was so nice to see and bring everyone together.” The gathering included relatives she hadn’t seen in years, reinforcing the importance of family in her life. “I have the best family in the world,” she added, a sentiment echoed by those who cherish her.

The secrets to longevity

Mary attributes her long life to “good health,” a claim supported by her son Brian, who noted that aside from childbirth, she had rarely been hospitalized. A fall last Christmas raised concerns about her health, but her recovery was swift and impressive. “Even though she is in sheltered housing, she cooks herself three meals a day,” Brian shared, emphasizing her independence and resilience. Mary’s commitment to staying active is evident in her hobbies, which include knitting, crossword puzzles, and reading the newspaper. These activities not only keep her hands busy but also stimulate her mind, proving that an active lifestyle is key to her longevity.

A rich family history

Born on April 8, 1925, in Lonmay, Mary was one of seven children. Her upbringing in the countryside instilled a strong work ethic, which she carried into her career as a bus conductress in Fraserburgh. It was here that she met her husband, Jackie White, a bus driver and army veteran. Together, they raised two sons, Brian and Graeme, and Mary has since become a proud grandmother and great-grandmother. Despite the loss of her husband in the early 2000s, Mary has remained steadfast, embracing life with a positive outlook.

Family ties and cherished memories

Mary’s birthday celebration was made even more special by the presence of her surviving siblings, including Murray, 88, and Daisy, 92. Although her sister Dorothy, 94, could not attend, the gathering was a testament to the strong family bonds that have supported Mary throughout her life. Brian reflected on his mother’s journey, noting that she has found peace in her later years, particularly after the challenges faced during and after the war. “She’s always enjoyed life, but she’s really just got on with it and tried to make the most of everything,” he said, capturing the essence of Mary’s resilient spirit.
