A man from Maud has received a two-year driving ban after being caught driving under the influence of a controlled substance. Keith Simpson, 55, represented himself at Peterhead Sheriff Court, where he pleaded guilty to multiple offenses, including driving while impaired and providing false driver details.
Incident details and court proceedings
The incident occurred on October 2 of last year when another motorist alerted authorities about Simpson’s erratic driving. Witnesses reported seeing his vehicle swerving dangerously on the A952 and A90 roads near Upper Ridinghill.
Following the report, police were able to locate and stop Simpson’s car.
Upon conducting roadside drug tests, officers found that Simpson tested positive for delta-9, a compound commonly associated with cannabis. A subsequent search of his vehicle revealed a small quantity of cannabis, further complicating his legal situation.
Simpson’s defense and court outcome
During the court proceedings, Fiscal depute Stephanie Cardo informed Sheriff Annella Cowan that the Crown was not pursuing the forfeiture of Simpson’s vehicle, as he had already sold it. Simpson attempted to explain his actions, stating that he had consumed the drug after finishing work and was on his way home when he was stopped by the police.
Despite acknowledging the seriousness of his situation, Simpson maintained that losing his driving privileges would not affect his job as a welder in the oil and gas industry. He expressed a willingness to adapt to the circumstances, saying, “I’ll just have to work it out. It’s my own doing.”
Consequences of driving under the influence
In addition to the two-year driving ban, Simpson was fined a total of £1,150 for his offenses: £250 for providing incorrect driver details, £200 for possession of cannabis, and £700 for driving while under the influence. Sheriff Cowan emphasized the dangers of driving on the notoriously hazardous roads in the area, reminding Simpson of the potential consequences of his actions.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the legal repercussions of driving under the influence of drugs. Authorities continue to stress the importance of road safety and the need for drivers to remain vigilant and responsible behind the wheel.
