A police investigation has been initiated following the vandalism of windows at the Elgin mosque, marking yet another incident of damage to this place of worship. This recent act of vandalism is not an isolated event; it follows a troubling pattern that includes offensive graffiti painted on the mosque in 2019.
Community response to repeated attacks
Members of the Elgin mosque community have expressed their concerns after a window was smashed during the latest incident. Zafar Ali, a local businessman and mosque member, shared his thoughts with the Press and Journal, noting that this is the third time the mosque has faced vandalism.
Despite these challenges, he emphasized that such acts have not diminished the strong ties between the mosque and the wider Elgin community.
“It’s a minority,” Mr. Ali stated, referring to those responsible for the vandalism. “It’s an age-old story; we know it’s a minority.” He described the vandalism as more of an annoyance than a significant threat, but he acknowledged the deeper implications of such actions. “What is more worrying is that the mosque is a sanctuary for a lot of the people who use it,” he added.
The mosque as a sanctuary for diverse communities
The Elgin mosque serves as a vital space for various individuals, including businessmen, doctors, teachers, and a significant number of Syrian refugees who have faced considerable hardships. Mr. Ali highlighted the importance of the mosque as a place of worship and community support, stating, “It’s a place of worship and a special place for a lot of people.” He expressed hope that such incidents remain rare, noting the overwhelming support the mosque has received from the Elgin community.
Police investigation and community vigilance
In response to the vandalism, police have been actively reviewing CCTV footage from the mosque, which was damaged around PM on Monday. A police spokeswoman confirmed that officers are pursuing a positive line of inquiry based on the evidence gathered from the surveillance images. “Around PM on Monday, officers received a report of damage to a window of a mosque on Gordon Street in Elgin. Officers are following a positive line of inquiry,” she stated.
This incident has sparked discussions within the community about the importance of vigilance and solidarity in the face of such challenges. The Elgin mosque, despite facing repeated attacks, continues to stand as a beacon of hope and resilience for its members and the broader community.
