Revitalizing Huntly: The transformation of Number 30 into a community hub
In a remarkable turnaround, Huntly’s Number 30 has emerged as a beacon of hope for the town center, sparking a revitalization movement just months after its grand opening. This transformation has not only breathed new life into a once-derelict building but has also ignited a sense of community pride among residents.

A historic building reborn

The journey of Number 30 began when the Huntly Development Trust acquired the former Cruikshank’s department store in 2019. After years of neglect, the building, which had served the community for over 140 years, was on the brink of being forgotten.

The trust’s ambitious vision aimed to restore the structure and repurpose it into a vibrant space featuring a cinema, café, and co-working area. This initiative was not just about preserving a historical landmark but also about reinvigorating the local economy and community spirit.

Community support fuels success

At the heart of Number 30’s success is the overwhelming support from the local community. Jo Macmillan, the manager of the facility, expressed her gratitude for the warm reception they received upon opening. “The day we opened, we didn’t know if people would embrace it or not. They’ve really taken us to their hearts,” she remarked. This connection with the community has been pivotal in establishing Number 30 as a beloved gathering place, fostering a sense of belonging and collaboration among residents.

Inspiring a new wave of businesses

The impact of Number 30 extends beyond its walls. Jo noted that the revitalization has already inspired “four or five new businesses” to take a chance on Huntly’s town center. This ripple effect demonstrates the potential for community-led initiatives to stimulate local economies. Feedback from residents has been overwhelmingly positive, with many acknowledging the positive changes in Huntly since the opening of Number 30. “That is the whole point of this,” Jo emphasized, highlighting the importance of community involvement in driving change.

A blueprint for other towns

Architect Ian Fraser, who played a key role in the project, reflected on the transformation of Huntly over the years. He recalled a time when the town was bustling with shops and activity, and he believes that the work done by the Huntly Development Trust can serve as a model for other towns facing similar challenges. “I imagine it could be used as a blueprint. The trust has really taken it by the horns,” he stated, suggesting that the success of Number 30 could inspire similar initiatives across Aberdeenshire.

As Huntly continues to evolve, the story of Number 30 stands as a testament to the power of community action and the potential for revitalization in small towns. With ongoing support and engagement from residents, the future looks bright for Huntly’s town center, promising a return to its former glory.
