Aberdeen is set to welcome back one of its cherished establishments, The Old King’s Highway, which will reopen its doors tomorrow after an extensive renovation. Owner John Wemyss, alongside his team at the Blinding Pub Group, has invested a significant amount into this project, aiming to transform the pub into a vibrant city center entertainment hub.

A significant investment in local heritage

Since March, the Blinding Pub Group has been working diligently to breathe new life into The Old King’s Highway. This renovation is not just about aesthetics; it represents a commitment to preserving local heritage while infusing modern elements.

John Wemyss described this endeavor as his “biggest project ever,” highlighting the challenges faced during the transformation. The pub’s interior has undergone a major overhaul, blending new fixtures with retained historical features, creating a unique atmosphere that pays homage to its past while embracing the future.

Strategic timing with Aberdeen Market project

The reopening comes at a strategic time, coinciding with the anticipated Aberdeen Market project. This development is expected to draw more visitors to the area, providing a boost to local businesses, including The Old King’s Highway. John expressed optimism about the pub’s potential to capitalize on this influx of foot traffic, stating, “We hope the business will be able to capitalize on the upcoming Aberdeen Market project.” The pub aims to become a staple in the local hospitality scene, offering a blend of traditional charm and modern amenities.

Exciting launch weekend planned

The pub will officially open at PM tomorrow, kicking off a weekend filled with live entertainment. In a bid to attract patrons, May Day revellers will enjoy free entry, a stark contrast to other venues charging up to £56 for tickets. John is hopeful that this event will serve as a litmus test for the pub’s future success, likening it to “a second Christmas” for the hospitality industry. “If we are not busy on May Day – and the whole weekend to be honest – then I might start to worry,” he remarked, showcasing his commitment to making this revival a success.

Overcoming challenges and looking to the future

The journey to reopening has not been without its hurdles. John recounted the state of disrepair the pub was in when he took over, with leaking roofs, broken televisions, and a non-operational cellar. “We had to spend 10 days clearing everything out that had just been forgotten about,” he explained. Despite these challenges, John and his team have remained focused on their long-term vision for The Old King’s Highway, ensuring it becomes a beloved venue for both locals and visitors alike.

As the team prepares for the grand reopening, John’s excitement is palpable. “We have put a lot of work in, we can be proud of what we have done, but we are also looking towards the future,” he said. With a dedicated staff and a clear vision, The Old King’s Highway is poised to reclaim its place in Aberdeen’s vibrant hospitality landscape.
